Hi all,

I have a windscreen dilemma, if anyone can help I would be grateful.

Last weekend I managed to crack the windscreen on my 997 turbo. I called my insurer (Admiral) that routed me through to Autoglass. I spoke with them, and both Admiral and Autoglass have refused to supply OEM glass (Saint-Gobain Sekurit) but want to use their own "which is just as good". Having had a bad experience with Autoglass in the past, I've decided not to go down this route.

I asked my OPC if they could do it... yes for about £850, which I can swallow (just!) but they are on back order and Germany can't provide a date for the supply of the OEM part.

The problem is, my MOT is due on 8th August, and the crack will result in a fail at this point, so I am looking at an indefinite period off the road. Not great.

So my question... does anyone know anywhere in the North West that can replace a 997 windscreen, ideally with an OEM part (but it not then with a good one), and who can be trusted with my car? I prefer to go on recommendations from this forum rather than take my chances, so I thought I would ask.

Thanks again!

Gary

I have had a similar problem.

Contact your insurer and explain previous issues with Autoglass and ask which other glass suppliers they use.

I ended up with an OEM glass and surround.

Can't help with the amount of time to get the glass but I would have thought you should just be able to pay the excess to get Autoglass to fit OEM. That is what I just did and it was about an extra £140.

Then you just cross your fingers that you get someone that knows what they are doing because with a massive company like Autoglass they will have both very good and not so good techs (not sure if you are more likely to get someone good with a high end car but the guy that just did mine was very good and he said he had just fitted a new windscreen on a GT3 as well)

Thanks. I tried that, but to no avail. I told them that I didn't trust Autoglass, and that they didn't use the OEM spec glass... I even pleaded, and threatened not to renew with them (which I won't) but all they said was that I could do it myself and they would give me £50 towards it!

Why do people use insurance companies like Admiral. They are cheap for a reason, as you have just found out

They have been pretty good to us in the past, and we've probably saved enough to cover multiple windscreens. I think it's just a case that they don't really cover glass in the same way that others do. The cost isn't the issue really, it's just the inconvenience of not being able to get it done in a way that keeps the OEM spec and in time for the MOT test.

I am with Admiral and my experience is exactly the same as yours. They replaced my windscreen with a brand called FUYAO and it was wavy (manufacturer defect) and not installed correctly. I complained and they removed it and replaced with an original SGS screen.

I'm currently trying to figure out if the installation was done correctly or if I am imagining the wind noise as it seems a little louder and noisier than before.

Give glassman a call, he will put you right.

Autoglass Leicester (depot) were excellent when fitting OEM screen to my 981 a year and a half ago.

Insured with SAGA but didn't need to speak with them for OEM glass, just asked AG to fit it.

But my glass simply has "Pilkington" all round, no other Porsche mark or logo. I checked the new screen was identical before they fitted it. Just the usual £75 excess.

Try another AG branch direct?

Have a look on the 911uk forum...

I think read on there that the windscreen forms part of the structure of the car and someone had joy noting to the insurance company that they wanted their indemnity on issues with the structure in the event of an accident if the 3rd party glass was used...

Anyway, I've not need that with my insurer. Am just paying the std excess. Initially National Windscreens said it would be a pattern part, but I told them no, gave them my VIN (this ensures the right spec screen is provided - top tint, aerial, sensors etc) and my insurer agreed to Porsche glass.

The screen has now arrived I believe - took 6-8wks. Hopefully being fitted next week.

I would avoid National Windscreens like the plague. They were my insurance company's preferred supplier and made an absolute mess of the fitment of the screen on my 997. Service was shocking too. Insurance company was very good about it and covered the cost of it being refitted at Porsche independent.

Reading about screen replacement I don't think there's a single place that doesn't get stick.

I'm taking the view that I've asked the right questions and been insistent on things like original glass. If they mess up the install then the insurance company can pick up the bigger tab.

I'll also be photographing the current screen carefully smile

Paul at Glasstec is your first point of call for glass replacement.
He made a fantastic job of replacing my Turbo screen a few years ago with OEM windscreen.

Give Steven Moore at One Call Windscreens a call on 07732 741559, he is based in Bamber Bridge, but will come to you anywhere in the NW. He has just replaced the screen in my 981, using the the same manufacture screen, without the 'P'.

Just being fitted now.

Genuine glass (P-mark etc). Right top tint, aerial, rain sensor.

Chap reckons they're not too hard to fit (has done them before)...reckons plugging the aerial in's the hardest bit.

Will report back if they made a horlicks of it smile

Fitted OK. They had challenges with the drivers' side upper corner that wouldn't seat properly, but it looks to be in the right place to me.

The seals are sat slightly different to the old screen, most noticeable up by the rain "gullies" (for want of a better word) where they sit "below"/"in front of" the gullies instead of over them. One side of the seal also looks more "sunken" than the other.

No wind noise (which is good). Will see what it's like with water on it at the weekend.

Everything else is fine (radio aerial obviously works, rain "sensor" (I'm not sure mine has one - it has the housing but I can't see any sensor in it - couldn't on the original screen either) and top tint all as before.

Nice guys who did it and stressed that if I noticed any issues to simply get back in touch.
