I need a black, smart, good quality duffle. I tend to go to the gym in gym kit, with my clothes in my holdall. So, it needs to be fairly large (shoes, shirt, chinos, wash bag etc etc).

Gucci and LV both do nice ones, but I don't want to pay that much or draw that much attention to myself.

Ideally it would have one of the "square" openings, such that when it is unzipped the bag is an open box shape.

I realise of course that I am straying into "new teaspoon" territory here, but if anyone can recommend something they've bought and been pleased with it might give me some ideas.

I knew you would be the first to reply. I just knew it. You're a bit slow off the mark, though. Have you been at Pride in Nottingham today?

No thank you. Phooey has spent most of his adult life chewing Travel Lodge pillows.

I'll take a look, thanks.

I have a so-so relationship with Aspinal. Some of their stuff is okay, some of it overpriced and under-quality.

Agreed.

It was a gift - I wouldn’t have even looked there for the same reason, however the particular one I have is a good quality bag.

They don’t tend to be as expensive as some of the better known brands which is a good thing!

Sunspel all the way for me. Not cheap but really great quality, simple and understated.

Interesting call thanks.

I've some of their polo shirts and to be honest they are not good. I thought I was going to look like James Bond, but in fact I look like James Corden.

Does it absolutely have to be black?

If navy or dark brown will do I'd look at a duffle from Filson (various sizes and colours in canvas and leather) or a travel bag from Tusting (various canvas or full leathers available). Sometimes both do a run in black but the other colours are more popular.

Filson is made in USA, Tusting is made in England. You can use either for almost any purpose, both will look better with age and last forever - both offer lifetime guarantee/repair service. Filson now has a shop in London just off Regent Street and Tusting has a factory shop in Buckinghamshire.

I don't work for either, I do own both and they are fantastic.

I have that issue.
I concur - it's definitely the shirts.

They are okay when new. But after a couple of washes they become short and slightly flared. They also lose their texture and colour. That aside, they are undoubtedly worth their premium price tag!
