My old HP Officejet has given up the ghost. It was part of the 9000 series, I forget the exact number (it's at the printer's repairers now, they rang and said the parts needed to replace are now obsolete).

Can anyone recommend a replacement?

I need:-

- Colour printing
- Double sided printing
- Flatbed and Automatic Document Feeder scanning
- As small and compact as possible?

Anyone have any recommendations please?

I've not personally used this printer - HP Envy 5646.
I believe it ticks 4 out of the 5 the requirements - colour printing, 2-sided printing, flat bed scanner, small/compact size but no ADF.

Budget?

Given you want as small and compact as possible, that probably discounts color lasers.

You get a lot of bang for your buck with the Brother MF devices.

In particular, this ticks all your boxes and gives you A3 printing (albeit manual feed) in the bargain.

It's very compact too:

I'm looking for a new colour printer - there seem to be a lot on offer from Currys on the Black Friday deals.
I rarely use one, so looking for a cheap one. I'd like wifi so I don't have to plug in my laptop to print.
The main use is to photocopy my artwork - which I realise I could go to a print shop to have done. Sometimes I'm asked to fill in a form that's sent in an email to me, which is an inconvenience as I can't print it.
There's an HP envy from Currys that's been advertised on TV for £35, but I won't want the HP instant ink that comes with it.

I've got a run-of-the-mill Canon MG6851 which produces excellent results both B/W and colour. It happily runs on aftermarket cartridges which brings the cost of printing right down (separate heads for each colour, too).

if you rarely use one, what's wrong with the HP Instant ink as you get 15 free pages every month on the lowest (free) tariff.

I have an HP Officejet 8710 and whilst it might not meet your 'small and compact as possible', it's not huge.

You have to keep your printer attached to the internet at all times - presumably this means you can't switch the printer off. What happens if there is a power cut? or the internet goes down? The terms and conditions suggest that HP stops your printer from working. I don't know enough about the HP instant ink programme - my old printer used a cartridge about once a year, and that's mainly because the ink dried up through lack of use. The HP instant ink might see that there is ink in the cartridge, even if it is dried up.

Err, no you don't - mine gets switched off when my PC gets switched off (in fact, it seldom gets switched on!). It needs to 'talk' to HP every once in a while and if you use it when it is not connected, next time it is connected, it updates the pages used.

As an update - I bought the HP ENVY 5032 advertised and it seems to be very good value for money. It came supplied with ink cartridges and the option to go with HP instant ink - which I did. The free option allows you to print 15 pages/month. Was wondering what's a fool proof way of recording how many pages you've printed? At the moment I've just written a note to self with set-up page and latest art print.
I did try to turn the printer off but it went into sleep mode instead.

Simply log-in to your HP Instant Ink account (web page) and it will tell you.

As an update to my previous comments- I had to change the colour cartridge on my printer to the one HP instant ink supplied and ran into problems as the HP printer kept asking me to enrol to the HP instant ink programme ( even though I was already enrolled).
Eventually I contacted HP instant ink support to try and sort the problem out. Was via online chat and have to say the customer support service was excellent - took over an hour to sort the problem out...which involved going back to the printer factory settings and re-signing in with new product activation code . However, the on-line chat helped me throughout the process until it all started to work properly again smile

I know I was concerned about the HP instant ink programme at the start, but have to say I'm very happy with their customer service helping fix my printer issues - even if it was fitting their colour cartridge that caused the issue.

A further update as the HPinstant ink programme have sent me an email saying they are withdrawing the free 15 page/month and it will now start costing 0.99/month for up to 15 pages from December.
I rarely print anything and have only received the one replacement set of cartridges ( extra to the initial ones) which are still full of ink.
I realise this is still a good deal but there was no mention of if I wasn't happy about the change I can cancel and revert back to if I hadn't enrolled in the Instant ink programme.
Anyone else received this news?

Yup, me too. I don't print much and have a colour laser on hand but I might just keep it on for a while - it's only £12 for the year so not the end of the world, but still an unnecessary expense running 2 printers when I only need one - and that one only infrequently.

What do you mean by "revert back" - you can cancel at anytime and then buy cartridges as you need them, can't you?

I have an HP envy on their monthly ink plan which has been brilliant. Always got ink and can reduce monthly payment when usage drops.

I don't know. I had problems when I first installed the instant ink cartridges and needed to get the help line to sort it as my HP Envy printer wouldn't accept them - readout said I had to enrol, which I had. It might be that the printer stops working if I cancel in December then.
