HI

Recently took ownership of my first Bentley Continental GTC one previous owner full Bentley service history, 40k on the clock. Have put another 12k on the clock so it's up for it's 10 year service. The week before it goes into Bentley the Oil Level warning light comes on and after investigation it was low so I topped up the oil to the correct level. Unfortunately the Oil Level Warning Light remained on after the oil level was checked and correct. No worries it's going into Bentley I'll get them to sort.

I'm no Mechanic but I have a reasonable understanding in theory, Bentley say the issue is with the bonnet catch but I said I can't see how a faulty bonnet catch would give a low oil level warning. They said the oil level was low, you opened the bonnet and topped it up but the catch hasn't registered that you've shut the bonnet as the catch is faulty. I said when I open the bonnet a warning comes on the dash that the bonnet is open, when I close it the open bonnet warning goes off so I cannot see it is faulty.

Bentley have now had my car for 11 days to do a service and fix the fault, today they say the new bonnet catch is faulty and they have ordered another replacement. Am I being stupid is there really a connection between the bonnet catch and the Oil Level Warning? I would have thought that the oil level sensor in the sump was the most likely cause of the problem but as I'm no expert I thought I come on here in the hope of finding an expert who can answer the question "is there really a connection between a faulty bonnet catch and the Oil Level Warning?"

Love the car but completely unimpressed with the service

Same with a lesser, but just as electronificated car. Low oil warning, oil was low, filled up, warning still there.
It took a day for the EMU to be sure that the probelme was gone, whereupon it deleted the warning.

thanks for that but I ran it a week and 500 miles before it went into Bentley, the oil level was correct but the Oil Level Warning Light remained on. Is there really a connection with the bonnet catch?

No idea about the bonnet switch, seems a bit odd that Bentley would rely on such a peripheral reading, but if the delare says there is one, who am I to argue?

Seems unlikely to me - you might have to open the bonnet to investigate any one of a number of problems, so I don't see the logic in what they're saying.

The cars in which I specialise normally have 2 distinct oil sensors - one for the warning light, one for the pressure gauge.

OP - you might want to consider editing your first post - the forum has quite strict rules on naming & shaming - and your first post could be seen as breaking them!

Bonnet catch switch resets the oil level sensor, which won't read again until the oil is warm and the vehicle is parked on level ground.

Pull the fuses for the DIP ( instrument cluster ) then reinsert.
