Hi. I’m looking to buy my first car and I’d appreciate any advice or suggestions.

I’m 24 (25 in October) and held my license for under a year. I require a car in September for commuting and expect to do mostly motorway driving, expecting to do around 300 miles a week.

I have a budget of around 4,000-4,500 for car and insurance, and I’m happy to get a black box. I’m not too clued up about cars, but been advised diesel would be best.

I was told a golf would be best and to look for a 08-09 diesel. I’ve found a few mk 5 1.9 tdi golfs for around £2000 and have worked the insurance to be around £2000. The insurance is with me as the policy holder. Might try adding my dad as an additional driver and seeing if it’ll help reduce the cost.

Any suggestions??? Looking for cars around Birmingham if that helps but will be commuting up north. Thank you!

1.9 TDI is a good shout at that price point. Passat/Octavia might be a bit comfier than a Golf for motorway cruising and possibly a bit cheaper to insure as less desireable to someone under 25?

Assuming you are only really fussed about comfort and not performance and handling a V70 D5 would also be a good choice, if you could stomach the insurance.

Adding a more experienced relative should bring the cost down, as can playing about with things like what you put as your job title, and where you park your car overnight.

I’m no expert unfortunately but nothing glaringly wrong that I can see. Check when the cambelt is due though as it’s done 50k since the last one. Other than that as long as it’s been serviced properly and on time I don’t see why that wouldn’t last on to 200k any beyond.

2 grand is a crappy price point as there are lemons floating around that are too valuable to just scrap and are p/exed by frustrated owners. I’d be half tempted to buy something Japanese and petrol for a grand and keep a chunk aside for potential repairs as I’m presuming you don’t have any other spare cash. A 2 grand diesel could get very expensive very quickly if you are unlucky.
