Whilst we have our 5 series in for some work, we have been given a brand new X2 M Sport which we are quite enjoying but..

Every now and then we get a warning on the dashboard that has the rear view of a car outlined in red. It only flashes for an instant and only happened about 3 times since we got the car a week or so ago. It came up when I went through some minor roundabouts without braking (wasn't going fast enough to warrant braking) and also when a car suddenly pulled out in front of us on a motorway. Have tried to replicate the roundabout one and tried going close to a car on a motorway (but there is a limit to how far we can push this) as well as doing a harsh brake but cannot replicate it.

It didn't come with a manual and when I have looked online, it has asked us to register the car as ours which we cannot, as it isn't.

What does this sign mean?

That would point to the catch being a bit loose as all three occasions were during longish journeys and the hatch hadn't . I shall see if we can open the hatch deliberately and move the car and see if it triggers.

It doesn't fit with the rest of the doors though which are in a different part of the display and more of a real picture of the car. This is an old fashioned line drawing and large. It sits in the upper triangle area between the speedo and rev counter and fills the space.

That's the collision detection in effect.

If you press the button below the hazard light you can customise the level for this and a couple of other things.

It's a collision warning - part of the Driving Assistant/Intelligent Safety system controlled by the camera in front of the rear view mirror. It thinks you're approaching the car in front too quickly.

As above, so try what I do

Go into iDrive
settings menu
collision warning
set it to "late"

It only comes on occasionally now, not always when expected wink

And there was me thinking the car was warning you, that you were 7.5 miles from Middlesborough & that you shouldn't stop...........

Thank you. That actually makes sense as the second time we had someone pull out in front of us and we had to brake heavily.

As for me and my roundabout escapades, it could have been a car waiting to enter as I was swinging round so that works too. Now we know we can (mostly) ignore it. I don't want to fiddle too much with settings as it isn't ours.

However it would appear the car has a fault and may have to go back before we get our car back so we might end up with a different courtesy car anyhow.

No, it was an Adblue fault that the dealer didn't really know what to do about as the technology is so new. They did want to charge us for time spent in showing us how to add this which my OH told them no chance, it wasn't his car and wasn't going to pay to learn how to maintain it. The head of servicing did step in and agree with us. When interrogating the computer it was something else which just flummoxed them. They were apparently pleased we took it to them to query rather than ignore it which could be a costly fix, apparently many courtesy car customers just ignore faults and damage the cars.

Anyhow, our car was fixed so we swapped back last Friday.

And we both prefer driving out 11 year old E61 530d. Much more powerful (obviously) and smoother. We liked the X2 and the gizmos but ultimately prefer the 5 series. We now want to try a new 5 series but daren't as don't really have the money to change at the moment.
