SPEED CAMERAS

The Conservatives have pledged to review all cameras in England and Wales and scrap those which have not reduced accidents if they come to power.

Labour on the other hand support the use of those cunningly sited little, yellow boxes and claim 80% of the public do also.

However, road safety minister David Jamieson pledged to reduce speeding penalties for those caught only doing a few miles an hour above the limit.

The Lib Dems say that speed cameras do have a role in increasing road safety but would give local authorities more of a decision in their location and use.

So basically they all leave wiggle room to keep profitable cameras by massaging statistics.
Oh if only the parties wernt virtually identical.

Yes, us motorists should realise that we're on our own. No-ones going to help us, they just want us out of our cars.

Well, I think common sense tells us far less than 80% back the way speed cams are used by pretend safety partnerships. And of the people that do back them, a very high percentage do because they belive the lies and falsehoods spouted by the schemes, and would be shocked by the truth.

I can't imagine a *worse* policy than this! If local authorities can set them up then they will go wherever an "important" councillor would like them to be. I've seen 'em in villages which have where they are clearly there to make sure traffic *outside the right person's house* isn't piling by.

Nope. An independent, national body with no revenue incentive should decide where cameras can go - and if they're the proper solution.

Trafpol should run the infernal things, alongside proper traffic policing (with enough manpower to do it).

Fines should be abandoned. No revenue incentive for anyone.

The points system should be retained. Too many instances of speeding - inappropriate speed, if the camera is in the right place - and you finally lose your licence.

The Lib Dems idea would be a nightmare; as Don suggested, the possibility of a local council not running it for the benefit of a select few brown-nosers would be extremely remote.

Just as bad would be the Lib Dems idea of local taxation.

Or even the Lib Dems running anything more than a children's tea party.

It's reaping in over £1Bn a year now for the local councils so they say, stealth tax or what? and guess who's No.1 target again?

I found this earlier report from July 2004 when I was looking for the recent one. Look at the year on figures!
