Can anyone explain why do majority of popular news sites use this weird "paragraph per sentence style", example

This is taken from the BBC, who I'd expect to aim at a more intelligent end of the audience. Yet they use this style which I believe is designed to attract imbeciles. I can't freaking read the thing without my brain turning inside out. Which school teaches this nonsense?

Even worse, sites like DailyMail and similar combine it with a style based on repeating slightly tweaked sentences so that the repeated bits don't look the same. I can only guess that they do this to increase word count and their audience is too stupid to realise that they've read the same article 2 or more times. What the actual f#%k?

It's for mobile. Because of the screen being tall and thin on a phone, a normal three(ish) sentence paragraph would be a solid screen of text, which isn't very appealing.
