Travelling just above 70 yesterday eve and hear knocking noise from the engine. As it gets louder I decide to drive straight to my independent garage and convince myself I have a failed injector so one chamber not firing! The engineer however thinks differently and feels my big end has gone 😱😱! Oh Lordy. I should hear tomorrow but thinking this is going to cost!! Any thoughts experiences or opportunities to brighten my day greatfully receievd! Ps 2011

I've heard of N57 engine failures, not as uncommon as you think. There is also an issue with propshafts as well, but that is something else. Think a recall covers that.

Partly why we went for a M57 engined X5 and not a N57 engined one.

M57 is an earlier engine designation, generally less MPG, a bit heavier, timing chain at the front and on the surface appears to have less issues

N57 later engine designation, more MPG, timing chain at the back and a few have been known to fail.

I say this as an N57 engine owner....

As put correctly by Ninja. It was lighter, more efficient, was a quieter and possibly smoother engine. I say this as a M57 engine owner!

3.0sd/xDrive35d engine, found only in the pre-facelift E70, is the M57 engine. xDrive40d is the successor engine, uses the N57, and a little bit more powerful and has the 8 speed auto.
