Afternoon all
Really green when it comes to car buying so need some help.
We're looking for a new car/van to replace our current Audi Q3 '14 and eventually also replace our Verso '13.
We're going to keep the Verso in a meantime as a second car. Don't particularly want another MPV as a van would probably do more of the same but better. In the longer term we're going to get something a lot smaller to run around town.
Few things to consider:
- Automatic
- Must have at least 6 seats
- Large boot as we run a small antiques business and do fairs etc.
- Budget up to £18-20k
- 4wd would be a plus perhaps as we're often going off road and would like something that could cope with very muddy fields
- Will only be used maybe once a week and only for longer journeys.
- Doesn't need to be very fancy, but would preferably have a good sound system, safe and reliable
Also as we're really dumb with these things, do you think better to PX the current cars or sell separately?
Cheers

T6 transporter combi all wheel drive seems to tick all the boxes. Except price. There are some commercial versions of 4x4s but I don’t know that they have 6 seats. Might get a second hand discovery or land cruiser commercial in budget but it will probably not be any newer than what you’re selling.
Thanks, does seem to tick the boxes. I guess it doesn't really matter to us whether it's newer, more that it is bigger and more equipped for what we need. The Q3 is too small to be big, but too big to be small (we didn't buy it, it was MIL's old car!) and the same of the Verso. Would be more useful to have a bigger, more useful option. We could get just the bigger option and spend more like £24-26k but it would be annoying for my wife as she doesn't love driving and would like a smaller city car too so we think splitting the budget would be better..
Have a look at the new shape X Trail, my brother in law has one and it's a really nice car - big inside too, we got two flat pack Ikea wardrobes in it with room to spare. Other SUV options comfortably in budget are Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, Land Rover Discovery 4 and Volvo XC90.
Check out the cavernous if stylistically challenged Ssangyong Turismo with four wheel drive. This is a really huge car and would suit your needs perfectly.

Good options, thanks. I have sat in a couple of X Trails and liked them. Nissan Patrol is possible too? Will take a look in the local dealership.
Anyone got an opinions on the Disco 4 in comparison to an older LC Amazon? Both seem good options too although do the rear 2 seats compromise the boot space a lot on the LC?

But for the love of god stay away from the R Class, it's mechanical suicide, like James May once said of the C63, it's probably trained itself to swallow a cyanide pill the day you buy it.

I loved my delica, looks are a bit marmite but that's down to the OP. I often toy with the idea of getting another to use as my van, but while they're mechanically brilliant if you do have an issue finding a mechanic who doesnt burst into tears because the body is a bit of a different shape is a bind.

He was talking about CL600/65, the C63 is very reliable, also the R Classes drivetrain is well proven as it's found in everything from C-S classes. But for the love of god stay away from the R Class, it's mechanical suicide, like James May once said of the C63, it's probably trained itself to swallow a cyanide pill the day you buy it.

My sister in law had an Approved used R350 and it was completely plagued with electronical gremlins - but thanks for the heads up about the CL
They're not all like that I have sourced 6 for people & so far so good, but like most modern cars you can get a lemon & unfortunately electrical issues & not the drivetrain are normally where issues will arise.Gassing Station | Car Buying | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
