My brother who is 50 has moved in to my mothers after his marriage went tits up. She is a widower and was just getting used to life on her own after my dad passed away. My Brother moved in about a year ago and has taken over the house. Its a 4 bed detached but he has filled the garage with bits and bobs and taken her new Corsa out and put his Cayman in. He doesnt pay any rent and my mom wont ask him for any. I asked him the other day if he would put his car on the drive as mom wants to put hers away but doesnt want to approach the subject. He told me no fking way. The car has a tracker on crooklock etc plus it isnt even his house. Im tempted to drag the bloody car out as he is just taking the piss.

Maybe your mum’s quite happy with the arrangement?

You need to get your mum to approach the subject and nip it in the bud otherwise this could easily cause big issues in the future should you need to sell the house.

Can afford a Cayman but is too tight to pay rent or even rent/buy his own place.

He needs to grow up but it sounds like he's not prepared to do that.

The longer it continues the worse it will get for your mother. You/her need to sort it sooner rather than later.

I await the thread in a few years time when your mum has popped off and everything has been left to your brother!

Indeed. Perhaps she likes the company and doesn't mind him taking over things? After the loss of a partner, maybe she (as an adult) is happy with the compromise and feels safer having someone live in the house - and maybe likes spending time with her son?

If he sold the Cayman he could afford the rent on a place of his own.
Ask him which one has more chance of getting a girl to come back home with him. A quick journey in an Uber to his smart flat or a drive in silly sportscar back to Mummy's house?

Or when the house is left to the two of them, only the brother carries on living there and won't sell the house.

You can then spend the rest of your life watching you brother living rent free in a house you half own while you struggle to pay a mortgage on your place smile

Unless you feel that your mother is somehow mentally incapable of making her own decisions, or is being coerced by your brother, then basically it's none of your business, and you need to keep you beak out of whatever arrangement these 2 adults enter into.

Yes, some people do call their Mother Mom, not Mum. Hardly an issue.

^^^ this.

It's local to Birmingham & Black Country in the West Midlands.

Just as "mam" is used in parts of the North. Not "right" or "wrong", just a point of dialect.
