Tried a search , but nothing happened.

I am getting daughters computer sorted tonight , it has various trojans on it . What is the current thinking on the best AV package at the mo ?

We had Norton , but I can't say I was that impressed. What do you proper geeks on this forum prefer ?

The freebies:

AVG from www.grisoft.com
AntiVir www.free-av.com (my personal favourite)

You'll need a firewall:

ZoneAlarm from www.zonelabs.com
Sygate Personal from www.sygate.com (the one I use).

AntiSpyware:

Spybot from security.kolla.de
AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com

Are the freebies any good ? I know it sounds daft , but I feel that if you pay bundles of money for something it's got to be better than something thats free.
I suppose we're all programmed to think like that...

I seem to be a committed Norton User at home - which, by most aaccounts means I should be committed. It certainly has its quirks too!

But I can agree that the AVG gets a vote, having used it on a works laptop.....

You're right, the pay-for versions of the software listed above is better than the freebies in that it has increased functionality. However, the functionality is often more than the home user needs.

It's essentially free advertising - by providing free editions which work, home users mention it to work/upgrade etc. It's in their best interests therefore to provide software that actually works.

I use Sygate over ZoneAlarm as it has a more basic GUI and seemed to like home networking better. As for AntiVir over AVG, well again preference, but AntiVir is the freebie a big, big name in antivirus protection...

After installing Norton I wished for my viruses back again!

Antivir, Zonealarm, Spybot and Adaware for me.

Someone else worth mentioning:

2+ adware programs = good
2+ antivirus = bad

(generally)

I vote for AVG7. Seems very good & unobtrusive and is constantly updating itself (seemingly every time I switch the PC on) - glad to have broadband!

hi,

Do you find Zone Alarm prevents you from getting on to some sites unless you tick the correct boxes.

I am constantly getting "Page cannot be displayed" or "Page not avialable" messages and it is often ZoneAlarm that stops me. Is it too good?
