Should be possible as mine claims to have an aux in. You can also get a funky interface that pretents to be a CD changer etc and in theory gives you better control. Not sure it worth the hassle though. (www.ipodmycar.com IIRC)

Dan, where's the aux in port then?

On the back if you have the same head as me? (slightly gimmicky Sony unit with 'blank' screen that can fold down to show the controls etc. Lots of naff disco lights etc!).
How fortuitous, I've just "mini I-podded" my two daughters. As far as I can make out the system with I tunes seems to be that whatever you have in your library on your PC gets mirrored onto your mini I pod. The problem comes with CDs once they're copied. Once on the I pod we don't want them on the PC anymore (to free up space) but if you remove them from the PC library the next time you connect the I pod it deletes its copy as well.
Justin mentioned a process by which you can make the I pod hold onto copies even though they are no longer on the I tunes PC library.
I wouldn't normally enquire as its not very Noble but I hope I'm forgiven for higjacking this thread.

Dan,
is the aux in a standard 2 * rca?
I also have the naff disco light unit!
Yep.
n.b. I haven't got round to inspecting the unit yet, but thats whats in the manual! I think they have dual usage for the CD changer, so bear that in mind if you have one already.
Paul, I think this will do the trick :

Given the reliability of ipods though, I'm not entirely convinced of the wisdom of not keeping the rips on HD. I just bought a big HD for it and rip everything very high quality in mp3 on the basis that its a universal format, and hopefully I'll never have to rip those discs ever again.

Dear Dan,
Thanks for the tip looks good. Are Ipods unreliable?

Paul - here's a tutorial on how to do "different" synchorinsations in iTunes.
www.ipodlounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/ipod-synchronization-and-using-your-ipod-as-a-hard-drive/
Basically you need to put it in "manual" mode and then tell it what you want moved across. You can then delete the MP3's off your hard disk.
I haven't heard of many ipod's "crashing" - but they are a mechanical hard disk and hence shouldn't be considered "bulletproof"

Perhaps I'm just careless, but I'm on my 4th ipod now!
The one that blew up when I plugged it into the firewire port was the most impressive failure. It lit up orange and a cute little puff of smoke emerged out the headphone socket.

We're total gadget freeks at work so end up with lots of these things, and the general feeling is iPods are about as bulletproof as a cheese slice.

Yeah I'm a gadget freak too, and have had countless PDAs and um ipods.
Most stuff works ok, the ipod is just spectacularly poor in terms of software and general robustness. Whats stunning is that all the competitors are even worse!
I've also had a gen2 iPod for ages and it is fine apart from once when it crashed and I had to re format it and resync.
Paul - you can buy external hard drives for peanuts nowadays, much better to keep all the music on the PC in case one of them does the same - remember you can't sync the music back off the ipod onto the PC again.

I've had an ipod for 2 years, and it's been fine.
Perhaps I'm more "mechanically sympathetic"?
I couldn't treat them better! My first 2 were pre official PC compatibility though and had a multitude of problems (firmware problem in ipod firewire), some of which lead to factory return level issues.
The one that blew up blew up brand new out the box. Its replacement then went back for servicing as it sometimes turned itself off mid play (did that from new). Replacement still does it though, so guessing there is a firmware problem on VBR mp3s.
Battery life is pretty shocking too, even when treating it considerately (i.e. not charging when part full etc).
Basically they just aren't that great imho.

Mine is a pre-pc mac only job too, and I get the quoted battery life, I think it must be you Dan
