As usual they go to BRAKE for a quote, which is that there should be a lower blood/alcohol limit... as if the limit is higher than it was so that explains the increase?

In Cumbria, you see a police car so infrequently that it is right up there with "what were you doing when Kennedy was shot?" and drivers chance breaking the law because they are confident that there is little chance of them getting caught!

Is this the case everywhere these days?

I wonder whether this is a factor, or just the Telegraph being xenophobic?

Round here it's a combination of two things, fewer coppers and more Eastern Europeans.

Speed cameras won't solve it, nor will a lower DD limit if it's not being complied with.

Why? Well as long as they're not speeding it's all safe innit?

“Brake is calling for the Government to implement an effective zero tolerance drink-drive limit of 20mg per 100ml of blood, making clear to drivers that not a drop of alcohol is safe.”

They are doing this with drugs because you can be sober from drugs but still be over the legal limit 2days after. Alcohol is a legal drug so maybe its time to do a one size fits all aproach.

Simple. We have become an over-populated, bitter & angry nation now finding solace in drink whether driving or not.

Is Trump or Brexit to blame

I strongly suspect that this is correct.

If these Stats are for all UK, could they be affected by Scottish Limit change in that time frame?
I know a couple of folk caught up here that would’ve been ok down the road since our limits were changed.

(I’d actually welcome all UK reducing limit to same as ours & introducing a less severe penalty for the area between the old & new limits, like 6points. mandatory license loss for a year is harsh in some cases when elsewhere in Eur it’s either OK or gets you a fine/short ban)

From the linked article.....

"Joshua Harris, director of campaigns at road safety charity Brake, said: “How many more lives must be needlessly lost before the Government acts on drink-driving?"

"Overall, accidents involving at least one driver over the drink-drive limit increased by six per cent to 6,070 and accounted for four per cent of all crashes."

The increase is a concern and the data should be interrogated fully to determine the cause(s).

It would also be helpful to hear what Mr Joshua Harris proposes to do to tackle with the other 96%?? The variously dozy, dumb, complacent, lazy, stupid, selfish ignorant people who cause the overwhelming majority of accidents whilst sober.

Brake is a pressure group, not a charity other than for tax reasons.

I wrote an article with information gleaned from, amongst others, university research in Canada and Australia. I included references to every bit of information I'd sourced. There was no counter research. The bloke who commissioned the article ran it past Brake and they dismissed it as nonsense. Their knee-jerk reaction meant that the safety issues that the research pointed to were to be kept from road users in the UK as if a publication produced these findings they'd be attacked by the Brake pack of hounds..

If you accept Brake propaganda, ensure you have a number of sources, none of which have been contaminated.

Well I'm off to get pissed, it's obviously a damn sight saver than driving while I'm sober!

Sticks.

6% would presumably be of those breathalised, so police in attendance, which is normally for fairly serious/injury accidents, or where drink is suspected to be a factor.

The 94% is very much the elephant in the room as far as road safety is concerned but it doesn't sell column inches.

Where I grew up in the middle of nowhere in Scotland it's quite common for people to drive to the local pub, have a skinful and then drive back home.

There is almost zero percent chance of them being stopped by the police as they are never any around, I imagine that it's the same in most rural areas and the only time that someone gets caught is if they have an accident.

I'm fairly sure the rise in drink/drive casualties in the UK is down to the dwindling resources that the police have available and the fact that everyone knows this and are more likely to do it....

It's possible, just possible that an organisation can do more than one thing at a time.

It's like when I'm at work - If I'm handling a client that accounts for 4% of my team's revenue, it doesn't actually mean I'm ignoring the other 96%!!

Presumably your organisation is suitably resourced to carry out the 4% and the 96%, while these days the police are hard put to act on the 4%, let alone the 96%, so we end up with speed cameras and speed awareness courses being used to raise money, and the occasional drink drive blitz in the run up to Christmas.

I have a friend who owns a jewellers, and twice when his shop has been ram raided, he has arrived some time before the police, because at night they are so thin on the ground - and traffic police are even rarer.

There are the same amount of police now as there was in 2000.

I think there is some substance this time. The Poles are bad for their drink driving.
