I'm new to this section of PH but I am charged with making four sets of wheel/tyres clean enough to satisfy the Australian import authorities when my son sends them to his address in Sydney. They vary in age and mileage but the OEM set is from a 2006 Z4M Coupé and may have 60-70,000 miles on them. What is the best way in the experience of the experts on here of making clean enough to eat the proverbial dinner from please? Remember we're trying to satisfy the world's most bureaucratic nation here!

Incidentally I also have OEM springs and dampers to clean to the same standard as the car that's going has Clubsports on now but may have to be restored to factory spec to be given a certificate.

Have a look round the bilt hamber website. They make superb cleaners.

For the tyres I’d be tempted to put new ones on. Cleaning all the tread on used ones wouldn’t be much fun.

Jet-wash, scrubbing brush, de-greaser on the insides, plenty of household washing up liquid to follow, jet-wash, wheel cleaner on the outsides and the tyres, jet-wash and a bit of tyre dressing to make them look nice. Did I say jet-wash?

RichB, yes I think you may have mentioned jet washing in passing! Thanks, I'll go and look at Bilt Hamber (thanks trickywoo) and dust off my pressure washer. Not sure about tyre dressing though - those Aussies aren't fooled by a sprinkling of glitter!

I cannot put new tyres on partly because of the cost (not cheap, and not old currently), and partly because of the fact that my son has chosen particular tyres for each set of wheels: road use, track day use, etc. All the wheel sets differ in size too.

Anyway, thanks chaps! Excellent speed and quality of reply as usual. smile

Hi!

I would recommend Bilt Hamber Auto wheels with a ez detail brush. Spray onto the wheels and barrel, allow a few minutes for the product to react and agitate with the brush. Then rinse off with your pressure washer and repeat if required.

Commander and Trickywoo, thank you both for the Bilt Hamber tip, the wheel cleaner is excellent. The top wheel is one of my X Type winter set and I gave it a cursory clean only. The bottom one is an OEM wheel from my son's Z4M Coupé. It is 13 years old and tatty, filthy, and blackened by hot brake dust. One application each side and it wouldn't pass concours d'elegance, but it isn't likely to bother an Australian AQIS inspector either.
