Brake disc corrosion? Audi A1
Discussion
Hi
Please see photo.
My Audi A1 has recently been for an MOT and they have said that there is heavy brake disc corrosion that needs urgent work.
Would this class as heavy corrosion needing urgent work? Not had any issues with braking and it doesn’t look all that bad (IMO)
Any advice / opinions appreciated
Thanks

They don't look great to me either. What's the price of a set of discs for an A1? And they'd take even a ham fisted amateur only 1/2 hour to fit them yourself.
Not sure on the cost of the discs on their own. but I’ve been quoted £126 from a mechanics for 2 new discs and brake pads (2 discs with heavy corrosion came up on the MOT - the image is the one with most corrosion) gottans said:
It looks like the corrosion has compromised the braking surface of the disc i.e. where the pad touches the disc so failing it is reasonable. If it were just on the narrow outer edge I would not think that reasonable.
Hi mate, It passed its MOT but the mechanic claimed the work needed to be done urgently (which is why I’m confused).
I just wanted to know if it’s necessary to get them replaced this week in the current state they’re in or if I could wait for a few weeks when it’s more convenient for me.

£126 for new discs and pads isn't bad at all. In fact, if that includes fitting, it's a bargain. Get them replaced, brakes are one area where you don't want to chance it.
Ta mate
The MOT centre quoted £220, looked online and found it almost half the price haha! Will get it sorted soon.

Are they the rears? Do you live on the coast? That looks canny bad for a not particularly old car.
Hi mate MOT certificate reads front inner and rear inner heavy corrosion to brake disc. The image shows the rear. I live around 20 miles from the coast. It’s a 12 plate and MOT history shows no work done on brakes. Just not sure on what exactly I’m looking for - I haven’t noticed any difference in braking since I bought the car a year ago when it passed its MOT with no advisories linking to brakes.

The inner face is normally a lot worse than the outer. Of course if he thought they were that bad he should have had the courage of his convictions and failed them.
Ta mate I will take to a local garage and get them to take a look and advise exactly what needs doing. Suprised it is wasn’t a fail considering they classed it has ‘urgent’ over the phone.

Then it seems they passed the brake efficiency test but are in poor condition, I would get them changed as I would not be happy to drive on them.
Cheers mate Will get them checked over once again this weekend at a local garage so I know what needs doing and I will book in works for next week.
You mention front and rear. Which pair has the mechanic said need repairing urgently?
To be honest as the face of the disc is coming off in the one in the pic id not hang about in getting it repaired. But it may be worth getting all 4 done and a brake fluid change while you're at it.
As another poster said, the inner faces are usually worse, due to the moisture build up between it and the disc guard. They have to be in a much worse state to fail the mot but that's not to say they're in anywhere near ideal condition as it stands.

The mechanic said ‘the works need doing urgently’ didn’t specify which disc brake / s, so I going to presume both. Attached is the image of the front on the same side. I will take to a local garage this weekend and ask him to give me a run through of what exactly needs doing and when. Will probably get changed next week.
