Hello everyone.

I have some important queries answered regarding a car I am looking to buy. I currently own a 9N3 Polo E and I'm looking to upgrade to a MK6 SE 1.4 TSI 122.

So the car in question is a 2009 MK6 Golf 86K in Huddersfield for just over £4.5k - Full service history and receipts but no MOT as of yet

Sounds good? But there is a catch! The car has had a new clutch (@85K) and timing chain (@84K) I understand the TSI's have dodgy timing chains but this has had the work fully and professionally done. Along with the clutch at the same mechanic who is a few doors down from the dealer who's selling the motor.

As you can tell I don't know much about this, but what is the general consensus here? Am I getting a well sorted car or one that someone is itching to get rid of because its been unloved. Would that affect me or can these Golfs keep going after a rebuild?

Plus replaced timing chain = Rebuilt Engine. So would this affect fuel economy? How can I tell if the rebuild has been done proper?

Look forward to hearing the replies - Cheers.

No one can tell you that, unless perhaps the previous owner.

How do you know that? If the timing chain completely failed then the head would need to be rebuilt with new valves etc. but it could have been replaced before failure as part of the recall.

If its as it seems then there should be no issue.

New clutch? Great.....

New timing chain? Great.....

However........ etc etc etc

Whats the general condition of the car? Does it look like it has been looked after?

The dealer had included a picture of the receipt, the mechanic goes into detail about new head gasket and valves etc £1400 in labour and parts. The work was done once the timing chain sh!t itself, no recall involved.

It looks clean as can be w/ plenty of pics.

But my worry is whether the engine work has been done properly? Why would someone be keen to ditch the motor after spending £2k in the past year on it.

Does the 122bhp version of this engine suffer from high oil consumption problems (as the twin charged version did)?

I'd stay clear of any other afore mentioned Audi/VW light turboed and chain driven engines. People google everything nowadays, so unless you're very sure, got a guarantee AND going to keep it, then don't bother.

We couldn't sell our A3 with same engine last year despite it being the cheapest in UK.

You have been warned!

Honestly nothing to worry about.

Our 2009 golf TSI has done over 180k on the original timing chain no issues whatsoever

Lol we got two separate opinions here, some saying that the 122 TSI must be avoided at all costs and others stating that the engine is rock solid.

I guess its all down to luck then

But I am not going for the car I originally mentioned as it seems like a bit much. I will be making another thread regarding my options.
