Saw this ad, it is for my old car, it was traded in at 165k miles in 2015. It is currently on 173k miles. It just got me thinking about how long the frankly bonkers fun V10 might be good for?

Btw I have no involvement in the sale.

If the rod bearings are changed pre-emptively at regular intervals (say 60k) and the Vanos units are dealt with if and when they go then it could well carry on for high miles

Vanos was dealt with early under warranty, but the rest of the engine internals were original in my tenure. I guess my question was how long can they go before such a rebuild?

On the US forums there are examples of rod bearings being toast after 30K and others carry on for 120+K so it is really guess work. Oil analysis will give some indication but really the best way is to have them pre-emptively changed. If yours is still on the originals then it is very impressive!

A friend of mine bought his at 60k and had the bearings done at 96k. It’s now done just over 140k and he has just driven from London to Rome including stopping at Spa for a trackday. We both did a few trackdays in our V10 M5’s without any issues at all.

Sounds like a few trackdays do no appreciable harm, mine also went on around 6 over the years. It always seemed to feel a little more responsive afterwards too, or perhaps that was just because I held a lower gear longer. The steps in the Rev range were addictive.

Just sold my E60 M5 that had 135k on original rod bearings. The internet paints these cars to be far more problematical than they actually are IMHO and I’ve had two of them.

Yeah but did you actually see the state of the rod bearings in both cars?

This is my car smile Looked at a few and bought a stupid mileage one as it drove well, had been properly maintained and was obviously cheaper. Only selling it as I need something bigger. Couldn't see the point in spending 6-7k more for one with fewer miles on the clock but with linglong tyres and patchy history.

Thank you. Likewise, good to know it was owned by a PH member. Have just taken a deposit on it from a former E60 M5 owner who will hopefully keep it flying to the 200k mark smile

Good news.

I wonder if the new owner will post the car passing 200k miles.

Feck me. At 18 mpg that's 10,600 gallons of high octane petrol. Or over 48,000 litres. At an average £1.25/litre over the years that's £60K in fuel. List price of the E60 M5 when introduced in 2004 was £66K?
