Buying 12C privately without warranty?
Discussion
Hi Guys
Long time lurker - finally looking to purchase a 2012 12C.
Found a well-specced car for private sale at sensible money. However, the car has no warranty at present (although it did previously have a Mclaren warranty I am told).
Seller states he will have the car inspected and a 12 month warranty applied by local Mclaren dealer prior to sale. This would be a condition of my purchase.
However, I'm sure I've read somewhere that because the previous Mclaren warranty had expired, there is a wait of 90 days before a new Mclaren warranty can be activated.
Is this the case? If so, is there any practical way around this? I don't want to be in the position of having no warranty coverage for 90 days after I spend a chunk of cash on a car - I'm just too risk-averse to accept that.
Would be most grateful for any advice or insight.

I really wouldn't do it, why gamble?
Just buy one with warranty from an owner that has looked after the car. If you feel like you would rather take the risk at renewal then great but at least you will have had some time to get to know the car and build confidence with it.
Plenty of cars with warranty but for the potential saving is it worth buying one without?
Warranty wise refused some claims on a 12c earlier this year.
My car is coming up for sale with Warranty, the beauty for the buyer is that they can see the history of any historic problems also.

Oh, I completely agree. I definitely wouldn't own one of these without some kind of warranty.
The seller says he will get a McLaren warranty put on the car for me at his local McLaren dealer (he will pay for the inspection and rectification of any faults prior to purchasing a new 12 month McLaren warranty). But my question was really about whetehr this McLaren warranty would come into effect immediately or after 90 days of my ownership of the car. If I had to wait 90 days for warranty coverage that would be a dealbreaker for me.

I think the way it works is if YOU buy the car and try and take the warranty out the 90 days rule applies.
As the existing owner he can apply the warranty and it takes effect immediately (he will need to have the inspection carried out as well).
The risk is on him, he pays the cost (Crica £5k for both items) and then you dont buy it.
There is a few 12Cs for sale on the Uk facebook owners page - contact them.

Have either of you considered Thorney Motorsports warranty? Hes a McLaren owner and will happily apply the warranty to any car as long as he can inspect it first? Its not quite as comprehensive but he knows his McLarens bloody well and is a very straight an honest guy to boot - its also a tad cheaper
