Like many of you, I drink a protein shake to supplement my abject refusal to do any cooking in the morning.

For the longest time I thought I'd hit upon the holy grail of breakfast shakes:

-2scoops My protein whey isolate, chocolate
-Water
-electric hand blender.

A simple triumvate. Smooth, well mixed, and far far less ucky than the silly ideas people have whereby a 'protein shaker' is used to create a lumpy mess. Eurgh.

And so, until relatively recently I thought I was doing well, safe in the knowledge that my smooth blended drink was as velvety and optimal as a morning low cal protein hit could be.

I was wrong.

'Ice ice baby' , a phrase so memorably coined by Mr Vanilla Ice, was clearly on point, some 20years before its time.

Behold. The new dawn of breakfast:

-2scoops My protein whey isolate, chocolate
-Water + Icex7
-electric hand blender.

The game has moved on.

Try it. You might like it!

Full fat milk. More protein in the milk means more digestion time, hence more protein absorption/synthesis. It's better for you than semi-skinned anyway. Mix a protein drink with water and you may just as well chuck some powder straight in the bin as it doesn't stay in the stomach long enough to be absorbed.

Any studies on that? It doesn't sound right to me - the amino acids would still end up in the blood stream and then would be processed as normal, surely? It would be inconsistent with the stuff that I have read to the effect that it does not matter much how and when you ingest protein as long as you get enough over the day (e.g. 2 or 3 big servings is pretty much as good as 5 smaller ones).

That's not really what I mean: if you mix your protein with water it will all be absorbed quicker than the protein can be metabolised. As milk contains protein itself it digests slower, along with it more total powder.

Anyone got any tips for people who dont drink milk or Whey?

I had a protein shake around 5 years ago and was violently sick and had stomach cramps

My body isnt a fan of milk based products, it can handle a bit, not a whole shake

cheers

Could try using liquid egg whites, crushed almonds, peanut butter and a cup of oats.

Protein and health fats should be a decent count and your gut will be happier.

Plenty of companies make non-dairy protein shakes - egg or pea or whatever.

Try the Protein Works or even just Amazon.

I always add the super-soaked coffee that sits at the bottom of a cafetiere - about an espresso-shot's worth and does wonders for post-workout productivity (lunchtime-wise). Perhaps not for the late-night shakers...

Eat.

I don't use shakes and have hit 300g protein easily, currently around 240g without really trying.

But you eat quite a lot, Ben. Smaller guys might find it harder to hit, say, 150-200g because they simply don't each much full stop.

Personally, I think I hit 200g from food most days, but I eat a lot of eggs and meat.

one doesn't really need much protein above basic requirements, unless you have a very strange diet you'll get what you need. But if you want a bump, use a hemp one, it's what I use. I also use coconut milk/cream and avocados to ensure the fat is there for absorption. It also makes it nice and thick like a pudding. I've moved away from whey, and won't touch casein. Don't really drink cow milk either.
my normal daily shake which is my my first meal of the day is;
packet of rocket/spinach
broccoli sprouts
plant milk (coconut is myfave, but I try them all)
huge avocado, normally over 200g
celery
chlorella
spirulina
blueberries (min 100g)
and some protein powder

I don't think that is right. The most evidence-based seems to result in quite high recommendations. I would be surprised if the typical English guy gets 1g per kilo of bodyweight.
