Bang/performance for buck you cannot beat a Subaru.
£12k will get you a mint Sti5 so 280bhp, 260lbs etc.
Point to point very quick cars as you can imagine being rally derived. My 996 Turbo is quicker from A to B, but not by a huge margin. Running costs are slightly high, though I ran mine for 3 years & apart from 6 monthly servicing (av service around £250-300) the only thing I replaced was a headlight bulb ! Utterly reliable as long as they are treated right (keep the oil fresh, dont thrash from cold, allow to warm down & dont skimp on servicing etc)
The interior is a little low grade & the build quailty is miles away from a Porsche, you can tell that all the effort has gone into the bits you can't see !
In a straight line I would say equal to a C2 996 up to about 90mph then the C2 would pull away. Very easy to tune too, I just removed the cats on mine & got an extra 25bhp (though I believe the 280bhp out of the box figure is in reality a little higher than they say !)
Not sure if I would or could go back to one, but if i needed a fast fun car for £12k that I could tune, thats what I would have.

968 CS or Sport if you need the rear seats.

968CS a good option. for 12K you'd also have to consider a 944 turbo - you'd expect to get an absolute belter for 10-11k with plenty of cash spare for chipping/upgraded exhaust/suspension, or a towbar, trailer and two full sets of tyres to go tracking with

good point, a 944 tub with a few choice upgrades could see you over 300bhp/300lbft for less than 10k.

that leaves you enough cash for M030 suspension

964 C2 LHD

Can't beat it for that money.

Pips the 968CS by a whisker, really just the exhaust note that does it.

Yes you would get a good view of the rear of a 968CS from your 964 when on track

That said, the 964 sounds better and would nail it on the straight bits.

Decisions Decisions

968 CS would be my choice in this price range - fantastic car. Can be tuned - intakes, sports-cat + zorst, ECU...even supercharged for truly insane lap times Best handling 'budget' rear drive sports car ever made IMO, easy to maintain too.

BMW Z3M Roadster is also an option (put trick tyres + a strut brace on it and the handling's WAY improved...the 321bhp grunt is mighty impressive, leaves a Boxster S for dead), I had one just before my GT3. Can be chipped for 20 to 30bhp more, plus zorst for extra 10 to 15bhp.

Impreza (may even get a P1 off Ebay for 13k odd) is a FANTASTIC option...traded my g/f's Prodrive Imp 2000 for a GT3 (she got the Z3M!) and it was a superb car...very reliable, VERY fast...only major prob is brakes - I wrecked a set of front discs during a 'spirited' drive through mid-Wales 2 yrs ago. Uprated to Brembo caliper + bigger grooved discs + redstuff pads + braided hoses and it improved out of all recognition.

Audi S3 is easily tune-able (bit less capable than the Impreza/Evo option but way better interior etc.) Check out the latest Autocar for a rundown on 'cheap' performance Audis.

Skyline R33 = more 'extreme' option (you'll struggle for a really decent one in this £range, but if you're into that kind of car then take a look on the forums).

Also consider Lotus Elise 160 or similar in this ballpark - fantastic trackday machine.

Yeah, and to think that after a whole day's Caterham Slalom session we were basically neck and neck; 8th and 9th out of about 25 people.

But ,of course, the bugger beat me...

to be honest, even though I'm a fan of superchargers, I reckon you'll need more than £12k to do the job properly (assuming a half decent 944 to begin with, you're going to *have* to do something about the brakes and suspension when 9m are quoting 350-odd bhp)

968 club sports are great on track but aren't they a little tricky to find (in good nick) these days?
