Hi all - not been on here for ages & forgotten how informative ( & funny) this forum can be after reading through numerous threads..... biggrin

I've been happily razzing about in my diesel 2014 Octavia vRS Estate for 3 yrs. However, the missus has changed jobs, so no longer has (or needs) her works' car: queue - her having to drive mine now!!

"It's too BIG... " (I wish)....she cries! (she meant - too LONG ( tongue out )...so now looking for a shorter car (with a bit of Ooomph) So now we've come to a dilemma!

She doesn't like driving the vRS, and wants a smaller, more manageable car, that we BOTH can drive easily enough!

I've been looking at

1 - Golf GTD - similar performance to what I have now (same engine, smaller car) - but wouldn't excite me enough (due to the afore mentioned comment)
2. - Golf GTi - thinking that the badge might attract the 'boy racers' at the lights pestering for a race (too old for all that crap now) as it looks so 'racey'
3. - Golf R - might be more 'Me' as it lacks GTi Badge in Point 2...(but will still have the racers after me who know the score with their cars...)

Also what's the real world mpg diff between the GTi & the R on a commute of 50% Bypass/Highway and B Roads?

On that type of commute, if the R was mid-late 20's, and the GTi was low 30's...I would probs go for the R as I (we) will only be doing 6-8k miles per year! (which is another reason why the GTD would be a no-go)!

Appreciate some real world advice of any owners of the above mentioned cars....

Golf R attracts as many races as the GTI if not more.

At least with the Golf R, anybody who wants a race would know it’s a sub 5 second car and will have no chance in their FWD Focus ST’s. A GTi isn’t that quick, people will be braver with the GTI biggrin

As a big Gti fan id choose the R. The extra power and 4wd sways it for me.
Leon Cupra is worth a look too.

How about a GTE ? It won't attract as much attention as the GTi/R and still pretty quick, especially the initial 0-30mph electric burst which is where it counts a lot of times. I saw these magazine numbers the other day.

Obviously mpg will be good, especially if you have the opportunity to regularly recharge it and it's quite nice to waft around in e-mode when you are just pootling about. You didn't say if you were after new or used but VW stopped selling the GTE at the end of last year so if you're only considering new you can ignore this post biggrin

Currently have a GTI and love it do I wish I had got the R hmm sometimes but then I do a lot more miles than you so other times I look at my MTG and think I am glad I did not.

I have GTI 13 plate performance with DSG

Drive to work is B roads only I get 34-35 MTG
Drive on bigger roads less changing of gears I get +41 all day long

The shout out on the leon is a good one as looked at one before I went for the GTI but honestly I just preferred the GTI so it all comes down to taste.

I've got this for sale. Genuinely one of the best out there, it was my father in laws and its a fantastic all rounded and with 310bhp it really goes. Comes loaded with extra's. Plus is think being a mk6 GTI it slightly more understated than the mk5 or the mk7 that replaced it.

I have a 15 plate R dsg in standard form, Real world I'm getting just under 30 mpg. That includes a spirited drive to work and a little hooning for pleasure. On a sensible motorway run or similar mid 30s + definitely achievable.

Not sure how this compares to GTI etc but considerably better than the many imprezas I've owned.

All in all I'm delighted with a very competent car. Great traction and good all round performance as you would expect from a hot hatch

Good luck with whatever you go for

Currently driving a manual, 66 S3 and average about 33 on my drive to work (indicated 35 this morning in unusually light traffic). Goes down to 28 in heavy traffic and approaches 40 on longer motorway runs.

GTI PP here and get 34-36+ in a mix of urban crawl, motorway schlep, too tired CBA drive home & some all out beans, albeit doing a lot more than 6-8k pa - would be handy for residuals. Last long run I did, which did include the mass of M6 roadworks, but also some not unexpected ugly Brum traffic, was over 46 mpg.

I guess the way I'm going to go is obvious, but personal. I didn't actually want any Golf, was looking in other directions, but think I made the right choice at the time.
Budget wasn't any real issue, but the R just didn't appeal. Faster and AWD, yes, but hated the attraction to the light fingered community, the ownership demographic (thanks to those cheap lease deals, which may also affect residuals at some point) and some other bits just put me off.

Basic, manual, front half of the 4wd and a good deal worked well for me - only thing I would like is upgraded sound. I also have enough of a like for the history and relative rarity.

However, as always, MMV in many ways.

I went for the mk 7.5 GTI, didn't see the need for the extra power of the R, nor the extra 100kg in weight for a FWD biased haldex system.

1 - Golf GTD - no
2. - Golf GTi - definitely an option, as suggested you could find a 2012 MK6 model which might been seen as "old" by the racing community.
3. - Golf R - in black or white I think it has less presence than a GTI, especially if you let the exhausts go black so they disappear into the diffuser

4. Seat Cupra might be an option
5. Nothing really from Audi, unless its the S3

6. If you can wait 10+ months consider the new Polo GTI its nearly as big as a MK5 Golf and manual gearbox is now an option in Europe.

'Racing' on a public road typically boils down to who is willing to be the most reckless and show the most disregard for the wellbeing of themselves and other road users - ie. suicidal overtakes, ridiculous cornering speeds with no margin to slow down/stop if there's an obstacle in the road hidden around the corner etc.

Just not worth it as there will always be an idiot willing to pull *any* move to get ahead and you will also be implicated should he cause a massive smash.

Had the same urges as you 3 years ago so bought a new S3 in Nov 2014. Chipped it to 365BHP. Realised shortly after that it was making me drive like a prat, despite my age (62 at the time).
Last year I moved onto a new model S5 SB - just as fast but less frantic and for some reason you don't get the red mist that a comes with a pocket rocket.

Not just me, my son in law has reported the same urge to drive like a prat in his wife's Cupra 296.

By all means get something fast but go for something that better matches your maturity, is my advice.

Realised this myself.

I've just left SEAT after 11 years, owned a MK2 Leon FR TDI (modified to 240ps), MK2 Leon Cupra R (modified to 370ps) and MK3 Cupra 280 (modified to 420ps).

I felt the need to drive this hard all the time, as if to prove a point.

Picked up my 2015 Cayman S 325 the other day, its a lot louder than my previous hot hatches (has the PSE option) but noticed I can drive this normally and enjoy it. Don't feel I need to floor it everywhere.

Just wondered do you intend to look after/service the cayman yourself?
It’s a car on my radar but I dont usually let my cars near a main dealer.

I find it strange the servicing is every 2 years or 20 k on them. Would have expected an annual service on a car like that.
