Track Bug - Instructor, Track Time and Insurance
Discussion
Hi All.
I see myself falling victim to the track bug. It probably the best illness to have but treatment is expensive lol.
I am looking for a good instructor at a reasonable cost, based on supplying the car myself. Any recomendarions and guidelines on a good deal for a full day?
I am also looking for a good insurance company to cover when on the track with an instructor. Any advice?
Thank you... time to put some of these GT cars to work!

There are many good instructors out there, some appear to be more fashionable than others, and as such prices range significantly.
Try a few and go with the one you like and has a teaching method that works for you, we all learn in different ways and what works for one may not for another.
I recently had a day with Richard Fores whom was excellent

LOL - you have the same illness as me then. I see myself falling victim to the track bug. It probably the best illness to have but treatment is expensive lol.

I've found so far it has been most useful to do independent research on the track you are going to... track guides - written and video - so you know where the track goes... then I go to the circuit and drive it myself for a few laps so you can build up some experience in your own mind of how the track goes and how the car behaves - and then I take some instruction for a stint.
(PCGB days and lots of other TDO have instructors on hand on the day.)
From here you have a reference of what you were doing vs maybe a more optimal way of doing it. Getting passenger laps with someone that knows the track well is also useful for comparison as well as getting them to come with you in your car as you drive.
For more general track driving up-skilling then yes also maybe good to book your own instructor for the day that can work with you on a dedicated basis.
Another good thing eventually is data logging... there are lots of different options - only limited by budget.

For an off circuit understanding of circuit driving I find the Driver61 tutorials very good.

If you head toward data logging, which can be very helpful, I found the VBOX Sport represents great value and functionality without having to spend a truckload of cash and have boxes and wires everywhere! - However a word of warning, data collection also serves to drive the desire to spend more time on track!!!

100% agree that driver61 is a great resource. And 100% agree that data logging will make you even more ill and the additction even stronger.https://driver61.com/uni/

Can highly recommend my friend and ARDS instructor Chris Dymond:

Been out with him a few times over the past few years in a variety of cars and he's excellent.
Off to the ring with him next week in fact in my GT3, can't wait!

To give you some context, costs vary dependent on the circuit location, how in demand the instructor is etc etc
The instructors that are flavor of the month charge circa £600 for the day, lower end would be circa £300 a day. - However that is not to say that those that charge more are any better. - Some will also include the use of a Vbox to enable data analysis, without wanting to stereotype this generally seems to come with the younger instructors as data analysis wasn't a thing when the old boys were racing.
You could also find someone whom would be willing to share an instructor for the day, thus halving the costs, I find this a good option as you get sometime in the car alone to practice what has been taught, hardest thing is finding someone who wants to share.
Most TDO's now provide 20 minute sessions with an instructor for circa £20, you could also book a handful of these, you may then find an instructor you like whom would be willing/able to offer 1 to 1.
