Can someone please shed a light on this issue. I have a bmw 116i, after it driving beautifully on a 600 mile round trip I started it and there's a horrible top end knocking. I have a video but don't know how to upload it frown. any suggestions on the issue would be appreciated
forgot to add it gets quieter when reved but as soon as you let off it returns

You would probably be better off getting a mechanic to look at it. Anything else is just guesswork.

If it's a mechanical failure (failed bearing, rocker, follower etc) then you risk causing more widespread damage quite quickly if you continue running it. I'd suggest you get it recovered to a reliable local garage for diagnosis.

Sounds a bit like an exhaust manifold blow but could also be a tappet not working.

The video makes it sound like an intermittent tapping. Is that how it sounds irl?

Sounds like a diesel !! lol

Probably direct injection ? Could still be an injector issue.

Fault codes ?

Maybe stretched timing chain hitting cam cover.

Could be an intermittent oil pressure issue stopping a tappet pumping up properly at idle. Blocked oil pickup pipe in the sump is a possibility. Does it have an oil pressure gauge?

Sounds like the chain to me. My wife had one and the tensioner had all but failed, a new tensioner did the job and didn't cost a lot either.

They are sprung and work on oil pressure also.

Because the noise goes when you rev it rather than get worse it does seem oil pressure related. How many miles has it done?

Unfortunately everything is sensor based and electric :/ had a few people suggest it could be the Vanos unit
