Back in summer 2015 I posted up asking about getting a new Audi. The option I considered where an 8P S/RS. Ended up ordering an new 8V S3 after a few recommendations here . I could have gone 8V RS3 but that seemed pointless having already got a fairly quick weekend toy.

That engine.. 2.5 ltr 5 pot. The 2017 facellift is grating me. Really fancy one. I'd go used this time over buying new outright as I did with the S3.

Budget would be about 45k (with trade in on the current included). This is really niggling me. 1st world probs huh...

Is it worth it???

The heart says DO IT NOW but the head says wait a year or two more then trade up to an RS.

Arrrghhhh !!

Very tough choice for sure. All depends on your taste and thought process. Do you need 4-5 seats with 4 doors? If you are willing to wait you could go for something like a sub 30k F10 M5 or E63 and in 2 years trade to an RS3?

If you can afford it then go for it, the RS3 looks the business and that engine sounds sublime.
They do seem to hold their value well so choosing a time to buy is tricky.
I’ve thought the same thing about going back to a daily hot hatch recently, only my budget is £30k max.
Can you really exploit the RS3’s potential on the public roads is my only concern, and the premium price over the likes of the S3 and Golf R.
To me £45k on a hot hatch is a hell of a lot of money, especially when you see what else is available for that budget.

This is the family car so yes, the space is needed. I don't have a large family so Avant sized stuff is not really wanted.

For a while I did think yeh, M3/C63 but none of the new stuff works for me. If i went that route I'd be looking at W204 C63/ E92 M3. Both with the last real proper V8 muscle.

45K is a lot for a hatchback. We hear/read that a lot but then the performance you are getting is up at supercar levels from yesteryear. And just how much more car am I getting from a £60k M3? But I guess you could say the same for any gap, S3- RS3?

Hmm decisions. My pal is nipping at me to go do it. But then he drives the new RS5...

Cheers chaps.

Go for it. Love the 5pot

Was considering the RS3 but seen as my neighbours over the border in Bradford seem to like borrowing them without consent I decided to go for something a little more off the radar.

The M135/140 looks a hell of a car for the money too, and a lot cheaper.
Great engine noise but maybe a bit too small for family duties.

It’s something I’m considering the only thing putting me off is the likelihood of armed balaclava wearing blokes stood at the foot of mine or my kids beds

I hate saying it as I lived through similar times with a Fiesta RS Turbo early 90's. But this would be a real concern for me, back in the 90s they just took the car. But breaking in for keys etc no cars worth that stress.

I was all set to order one based on the looks and performance, but realised that the boot size was a problem. I’d down-sized from a C63 to an M2 only a few months previously, and just couldn’t get on with the small amount of luggage space.

I’ve an M3 now (F80) as the family car, and even that struggles if I need to transport much.

Get one and have it debadged and do not put all the extra bits on the outside.

My wife's black one has no badges and the titanium pack outside and honestly doesn't look too much different from a 1.4 diesel unless you peer inside and see the seats or know off the top of your head brake calliper sizes.

If you must tell other road users what size your engine and what trim level you bought then you have to accept some of them are the type to try to steal it. For me I like driving it etc and don't need to advertise ;-)

Not worth the hassle is it! If I do get one of the new ones (I’m ordering something next September) then I will have a Clifford alarm fitted along with a tracker and keep it in my garage

you’ve got an S3 but don’t fancy an rs3 because of the theft risk. Seriously?

Have you considered a GTI clubsport? It's basically a golf r (same engine but detuned) and it's absolutely fun to drive, something completely different to the likes of the rs3/s3/m140i that you see in mass everyday without fail..

You will save a good 20 odd k too!

Having said that if money was no object, I would of had the facelift rs3 over the clubsport simply because of that 5 pot!

Hearing that poster twice broken into with people in the house for a car..... I’d rather run a rusty old Sierra 2.3D.

I have considered the club sport but that came out after I’d got mine I even considered getting a clubsport s just to have but only 2 seats so wife wouldn’t have utilised it and me very rarely! Rs3 covers all bases it just attracts thieves! I’d say if anyone is going to buy one seriously upgrade your home security! And get a Clifford as at least the proxy sensors would detect someone sniffing around! For me it isn’t the buying or even someone coming in on a night as my house is fairly well protected (touch wood) it’s during the day whilst I’m at work in my van and the cars on the drive! We have 2 kids I don’t want something happening to her or my kids over a piece of metal!

BUT! You’ve also got to think Audi have made 100s maybe even thousands and they haven’t all been stolen

It's a great drivers car.

I immediately added ghost to my car and anti snap locks. I sleep easy at night that they won't get in the house without smashing a window hopefully by the time they got in by doing this, police will have long arrived.

On my pvc doors I paid extra for better reinforcement no letterbox and mortise locks as I didn’t trust the locks they could snap!

All of my interior doors get locked on a night so it would be extremely slow going and I have secure film on the downstairs windows! Also have a decent alarm! I’ve also had pillars built and a fence down my drive so the car is kind of hidden and a gate and new driveway is been put on next year!

I was bothered about the gti but not so much now, if I went to the rs3 then with my home security I’d be happy but I’d definately go with Clifford a steering lock maybe a post sunk in the ground and obviously my gates with the wife’s car blocking it’s path! It would be a lot of work for anyone to attempt anything

I’m also adding cctv and I could keep a car in the garage if needed
