Sorry for what is probably a silly question.

I got a Weber 4 burner a month ago, I bought a 12kg bottle from the local bbq shop and it appears to have run out already. It’s had daily use for just over 3 weeks around 20 minutes on average I would say. The odd time for 45 minutes.

The bbq is not lighting now, and I can’t hear the gas when I turn it on, so I am assuming the canister is empty. I just weighed it and it’s 24lbs, so I assume when shops sell ‘12kg gas bottle’ that is the weight of the empty bottle. Which suggests the bottle is already empty.

A 12kg cylinder means it is filled with 12kg of gas in it's liquid state.

I'm still using a 13kg cylinder from last year and have done some long cooking sessions in that time. Might be a silly question but do you turn the gas off at the cylinder when you're done?

Yep always turn it off when done. I’ve tried to work it out, and I think it last about 6 hours of cooking time.

Because it’s a 4 burned though, this might be about right. Just seems that it’s gone awfully quick!

I can't find anyone who stocks Flogas 12kg Patio Gas cylinders, could be that you were sold a part used old stock.

Flogas sells an 11kg Leisure Gas cylinder which is a lurid green colour.

https://www.flogas.co.uk/shop/cylinders/flogas-gas...

In any case, I'd switch over to a Calor Patio Gas, 13kg cylinder

https://www.calor.co.uk/13kg-patio-gas-bottle.html

Very easy to find and the cylinder has a guage on it so you have some idea of how much gas is left.

Thanks for that. You’re correct, in that it’s actually an 11kg cylinder, the same as you linked. I obviously don’t know enough about the subject, but on the bottle it says 12.9kg tare weight. So confusing!

I’m going to change to the Calor that you suggested. Probably another stupid question. But do companies let you change your cylinder from one brand to another when exchanging, or do they only do like for like? Just wondering if I’ll need to fork out another £40 for a bottle

20-45 minutes per day every day for three weeks is A LOT of BBQing. Are you running a kids holiday camp or scout camp or something? laugh

Depending on what you're actually cooking you may find you don't actually need all the burners on all the time. I have a 6 burner and rarely use more than 3 - it's nice to have an area for direct heat and one for indirect heat.

One way to avoid part of the cost of switching is to pick up an empty calor gas cylinder from Gumtree or similar. You should be able to find one for £10 or so, if not less.

Worth checking with calor if you can swap 15kg butane for 13kg patio gas, you certainly used to be able to do that.

Empty butane are usually cheaper.

Anyone use Safefill refillable cylinders that use LPG?
