Last week one of the local roads was closed so we dutifully followed the diversion signs and got lost in a pretty much deserted newly developed housing estate.

They have just sent us this picture of my mums car contravening the bus lane, which doesn't appear to be the case but according to these road markings we are on the wrong side of the road after negotiating a turning circle/ dead end type affair. Neither of us actually remember anything about it as we were just trying to figure out where the hell we were and how to fix that..

Still, does this look like we are in the bus lane? If anything I would think that maybe we were about to pass a parked bus..

I am about to go back there and see if there is some signage or anything that we missed.

So you turn onto a road that clearly says bus only on the wrong side of the road and don't think you have done anything wrong?

or have I got it all wrong?

Honestly I don't know!

The satellite images for the area don't show it as it is all brand new.

i will report back, the picture definitely raises some questions smile

Notwithstanding that you are on the wrong side of the road, the entry note painted on the road from that junction state that it is Bus Only, so I would say yes you are in the wrong.

That's not a bus lane . Unless it has recently changed a Bus lane has to have Bus Lane on the road and completely different road markings. It looks more like a "No entry except" situation, Signs would need to be in place. I can't advise how to proceed but they haven't contravened a bus lane.

The road in your direction of travel was buses only. The fact you drove in the other (oncoming) lane to circumnavigate that doesn’t make it ok, I presume.

Drive back down and have a look!

Sadly driving on the wrong side of the road doesn’t cancel out traffic regulations wink

If you struggle to drive on the correct side of the road I'm not surprised you have got a ticket.

Doesn't look like there's much to argue there based on the fact the cars clearly on the wrong side of the road given the give way markings it's just driven over and the writing on the carriageway.

Easily done I'm afraid, I did the same in Gloucester city centre. Luckily my firm paid the fine.

Yup, looks like a lack of observation on my part.
This is the approach , the last time I was there it was just a loop at a dead end and now there is that new bit of road into the new estate.

The sign I didn't see is on the right..I guess I was just noticing the bus stop bit and probably distracted looking at the new estate I hadn't seen before! And in my defence your honour, on every lamppost for the previous half a mile there was a blue circular sign warning of pedestrians and cyclists so I might have been suffering from blue circular sign overload and not noticed this one was different smile

From the other side, it looks like normal traffic can go out, but not in.

I guess I will have to cough up this time!

You are being rather rediculous OP, you can't avoid a bus lane restriction by driving down the wrong side of the road biglaugh

While i was taking pictures, a resident smiled at me and said 'You too?'

He has seen lots of people doing what I did and then coming back for a look after getting a ticket.

The whole thing is designed to generate money.

Nothing to do with road safety or traffic flow.

It looks like it's designed to stop people driving into the estate from that direction.

That reverse shot looks as if cars (residents probably) can drive down the road and exit from it, but not come back up it? Unless there is a similar prohibition sign further up.
