I’m getting bald and on sunny days i need to wear a hat to stop my head getting burnt.

But... how exactly do you wear a hat without looking like a knob? Baseball caps aren’t very English and a bit scruffy but anything more structured and you look a bit try-hard. Flat caps make you look like you’d like to do voice overs for a betting advert. What options are there?

I think there are some perfectly acceptable, non-chavvy. non-logo'd peaked caps that can be worn.

Especially the more shapeless ones with softer material, rather than the traditional domed baseball cap usually worn atop the head at a jaunty angle.

Went bald when I was 17, I'm also extremely fair skinned so burn easily!

Dab of suncream on the head before going out works wonders. No need for a hat then.

I guess suncream works well for end stage baldness but in the intermediate stages i find it creates a sort of unpleasant David Brent style brylcream effect.

Flat caps are like double barrelled names. They are upper class or factory slave - no intermediates. Depends on the quality I suppose. I bought a tweed flat cap from a charity shop for the Goodwood revival and I felt weird in it too. Baseball caps are not acceptable in my old fashioned view either. Perhaps a panama on sunny days?

Whilst not bald I do have rather a large forehead, I just slap a load of suncream on and I'm fine; never burnt my forehead.

I hate hats, I look a tt in them and they make me all sweaty.

A Panama makes you look like a middle aged middle class Guardian reading Van Morison fan.
What could possibly be worse than that? A plain baseball cap just says you're trying to protect your head rather than trying to project any kind of image. Just make sure you get one with a curved rather than a gangsta flat peak and you wear it in the peak-forward style definitely not backwards or sideways.

You want a lotion rather than a cream. Nivia do two types in spray bottles, one being more viscous than the other. Get the one with the window in the bottle as it sprays on like water.

I sometimes wear a hat like this one on holiday. I haven't tried wearing it in the UK, but in reality no one is going to stare or be in the slightest bit interested in what you are wearing anyway. I mean, it's not like you're going to be wearing a sombrero.

I'm not bald, but have fair skin so wanted a wide brimmed hat for my neck and face, and although I do wear baseball caps, wanted something that offered a bit more sun protection. However, I fancied something different so bought one of these...

It depends what you look like and how you dress.

Personally I am quite good looking and dress well, so I get away with flat caps, trilbies and panamas. If you're less gifted than I aesthetically and sartorially, a well-chosen flat cap can look very good providing you choose the right cloth. A brown hounds tooth check will make you look like a racing pundit, a solid colour won't. Try a Kangol 504.

Used to wear BBall caps but as I've got older they look pretty daft on me so I've switched to close fitted news boy style caps (a bit peaky blinders but smaller, available in both tweed and plain cotton). Actually don't much care what other people think.

So anti-hat here. I like wearing hats. Crash helmets (are they hats?) on the motorbikes, same on a bicycle, flat cap or a forage cap in the convertibles, wide brimmed hats for out in the sun, baseball caps for when I'm doing some stty job under the car or messy diy. I've got a genuine Ushanka (gift from a Russian soldier) along with several other furry hats and beanies for the cold times. I've got a couple of old Barbour water proof hats for wet weather.
Don't know why the OP thinks he will look like a knob wearing a hat, but then I'm way past caring what people think of me.

Indeed. However, unless you are both bad and a motherfker, best avoided the wrong way round and with pink specs. Even I would struggle to pull that off.
