Anyone got a street defibrillator?
Discussion
Anyone organised anything like this. I live in a street with 20 houses and was thinking about sending a mailshot to gauge interest. I have two business premises and both have them. Running costs are batteries and pads, living outside it would probably need to be connected up to power with a cabinet to stop it freezing so would need to be connected to the side of someone's house. My house is in the middle so would not have a problem.
Over the 20 houses, I reckon it would work out at £100 each for the first year, then £20 a year over the next five years.
If you got a mailshot would you contribute? I have no problem paying for the whole thing. If people did not pay should they get the lock code to access it.

Good idea. I'd happily contribute if the offer came up. I volunteer for my local RAYNET group and we have one in the comms unit, we work pretty closely with St John (who of course have their own) but I don't think you can have too many.
I must get myself on a first aid course, not for the volunteer role since I'm not insured for that, but for myself.

Err no thanks. I’ll just dial 999 and save my money.
How quickly can an ambulance get to you? We're 12 miles up a single track road from the nearest ambulance station. Even if there's an ambulance sitting there ready to go, it'll be at least 15 minutes away. Enough time to die. Are you that confident in the ambulance service?CoolHands said:

Defibrillators in villages save lives.Your brain will die without oxygenated blood in 4 minutes, or 5 minutes if you're lucky.
If someone's jumping up and down on your chest after a cardiac arrest, it'll be a holding measure that will buy you a few minutes maybe 10-15, but- nearly always with a very few exceptions- the only thing that will stop you dying is a defibrillator.
Your rescuers won't even finish the 999 phonecall in 5 minutes.
You could still be in a position to survive after an ambulance has
Anyway, funerals are expensive and you probably won't save money.

I’d hate to see the day a non contributing neighbour goes into cardiac arrest and someone asks ‘have they paid?’. Change your mindset. Over the 20 houses, I reckon it would work out at £100 each for the first year, then £20 a year over the next five years.

This is exactly the sort of thing your parish council is for. Get along to the next meeting. If they aren't keen, ask the clerk (who probably clerks for three or four others) for advice. As stated above, ask the right body and it's free anyway.
P.s. if the parish council comes through, consider putting some of your time back in. They aren't all community speedwatch loons.

Wow how do the tens of thousands of villages all through the uk cope? Are people dropping dead (from heart-attacks) like flies?
Despite what anyone here says, most people would not like to pay yet another bill. Lots of people say yes when questioned if they would like/buy many things, but don’t follow through.

Also worth looking into the community first responder scheme. Early cpr and defibs save lives but having someone on scene who can provide effective ventilations is even better. They also carry defibs.
Having been one myself, I’ve attended several arrests within a short radius of my house, so they do happen.

About 180 people per day. So, er yeah.
Lots of lives can be saved from defibrillators. It’s pretty simple.
And how many would be saved by this great idea? My grandad (as lots have I’m sure) had a few heart attacks. Then had a big one in his sleep and died. He was one of the 180.Lots of lives can be saved from defibrillators. It’s pretty simple.
Reminds me, what happened to the “we are the 99%” movement.

Based on that statistic, not a financially sound decision to buy!
These are popping up all over the place. I think in many instances they are useful (large numbers of active people or in workplace) but in OPs case my first thought would be does anyone in the village have suitable first aid skills and would you know how to alert them if needed? I'd answer that issue first before going for the gucci kit.

So would you refuse the use of a community-based device if it was required?Reminds me, what happened to the “we are the 99%” movement.
