M140i, golf r or a45?
Discussion
Hi all,
I’m due a new motor soon and I’m looking to buy a hot hatch but can’t decide what to go for. Golf R and M140i are certainly to my liking and even though it stretches out my budget, I also like the a45 having driven it before. S3 and rs3 are on the list of choices aswel. Which I’m your opinion is the best, in terms of all round performance and finance?

I found the RS3 boring to drive and over assisted - felt like an Xbox.
Ended up with the A45 as the others are slower - owners will say "blah, blah, in the real world, blah, blah" - but at the traffic lights, they know they are toast and sat in the slower car. And my teenage kids think I'm cool when it pops and bangs doing the school run.
Thats aside, the A45 is awesome but a bit of a one trick pony in that it's brutal quick....anywhere.....and err....thats it. (and the making 140 owners feel sad and school thing)
Just ordered a Volvo V60 as I use my A45 to carry my kayaks, mountain bikes, tow my enduro bike, dogs....and it's a bit lame at that (although funny to get people of the lights with two 4m boats on the roof)
TBH....I think you need to be 14 years old to really enjoy one.

Don’t know if you are looking at new or used ?
A45 about to be replaced so may be good deals on outgoing cars left in stock//demo.
M140 is a great car, not as quick but really good fun to drive and still very fast for the money, plus it can be easily fettled using approved BMW parts to firm up the suspension, add a bit of noise etc.
Golf R -superb all rounder but IMO the least enjoyable of the three albeit I doubt you would regret it.

The Golf R isn't as fast as people make out. But who cares? Just being fast gets old quick. After 2 years in a Cupra 290 (supposedly ph's favourite application of the MQB platform) I actually now appreciate how good the R was at pretty much everything.
Not driven the M140i but have covered several thousand miles in an m135i and while the engine feels expensive and it makes the nicest (real) sound. It's a bit crap at being a hot hatch and quite frankly the rest of the car let the engine down.

Personally for me it would only be the A45/RS3 they're just that step above the others & are great fun, maybe a bit two dimensional but boy they're cracking cars (that yes are slightly dominated by their engines) the Golf R & M140 aren't the last word in drivers cars (the Megane/i30N/PS 308 GTI have that rapped up) but they're decent enough.
