Which hot hatch to buy??

Hi all,

I’m due a new car, looking for a hot hatch now (big upgrade after owning my Toyota Auris for 5 years!). I’m spoilt for choice at the moment, I’ve been looking at deals for the golf R and M140i, also the a45 which I’ve drove before and loved it (although seems a bit pricey but I still reckon it’s worth the money!). I’ve also looked at the rs3 & s3. One of my friends has bought the new golf GTI and it sounds amazing! Can anybody please offer me any advice on what to go for?


P.S I’ve posted similarly to this before but after doing more research I could still do with a bit of advice.

Hyundai i30n performance. Lots of us enjoyed driving one at millbrook recently.

You're going to get a load of different answers here because theres no "right" answer.

Go and have a drive in them and see what suits you best.

Right first things first what's your budget?

If it's around 30k then +1 to the above or the Megane RS, now if you don't mind used & you don't mind losing a bit of driver feedback then I'd be taking the A45/RS3 in a heartbeat.

The cars youve listed are more hyper hatches, yes they are incredibly quick and powerful BUT the ones you have listed are unlikely to be much fun at anything less than 10/tenths which is impossible to do on our current roads.

If your looking for fun i would lower the power bracket

Far better than what? I personally would buy an I30N over several (almost all) of its competitors but the RS is faster, has sharper steering, better seats, imo looks better and is incredibly tailhappy with power oversteer on tap which is a trait that none of its competitors have except perhaps the m140i. There are plenty of reviews where the RS comes out on top despite the PH hate for it.

The A45 AMG is another great car if you are comfortable with an auto gearbox althought that saps much of the fun out of it for me and also the new Megane looks very good although several reviews seem to prefer the old one.

Personally I'd have a Golf R over a GTi.

The only way to find out which one is for you is to go on some test drives as most of these cars are quite readily available at dealers. The megane could be a hard one to get a drive of however.

The RS looks a little too plain for my liking, very disappointing after the earlier versions.

You need to drive all the cars that appeal to you and make sure you get a test drive where you can actually use them! Personally, I'd seriously look at the Golf GTi Clubsport.

Also worth mentioning residuals! The Hyundai sounds like an amazing hot hatch, everything you'd want but in a few years it'll be worth less than a multipack of Nik Naks. Something like a Golf GTi, particularly a Clubsport, will not depreciate as badly.

Although this is true I don't think the Hyundai will depreciate badly at all, maybe £10k over 5 years. The GTi Clubsport kind of defeats the object of a hot hatch as it has only 2 seats.
