Is easier to find than a short-tail G50!

If anyone comes across a decent one complete with clutch, I'll bite their hand off for it

Even considered Craig Bramscher's G50/52 which Powerhaus II converted for him, but at a shade under 8K GBP it's a no-go.

Is a second hand 996 box really that much of a no-no? At 1800 they are good value.

Thanks Guy.

Domster - dunno mate? Just been looking for G50's 'cos that's what's recommended. I'm not that au fait with Porsche boxes in general. As long as it's short enough not to poke out of the back, mates to the Chevy with the adaptor plate and can take 600bhp then I'm happy!

Edited to say:

If I'd have gone the 996 (Getrag) route, I would have gone for the central gearlever and cable shifter - but I didn't. So, the search continues

I said that I'd heard unfavourable reports about them!

Actually, last time I spoke to them they didn't have any?!>!?!

I'll give them a bell.

Cheers

I got my G50/21 993 6 speed from them, and everything was conducted over the phone and delivered to my home.

Service was excellent

Want a G50/00 ideally. No reason not to use them really, just heard some horror stories about 'boxes turning up that had been in an engine fire, so all seals had melted, wrong parts, parts missing etc.

Did they supply the 'box complete with mounting cross member, clutch forks, slave cylinder, speedo drive, drive shaft flanges, drain bungs, reversing light switch and hopefully a starter motor and starter ring gear?

The box was complete but for the clutch which I did not want anyway, sounds like you have another motive, might it be that 6 speed sequential G50 from Gemini Engineering to go with that 600 BHP supercharged engine

lol! I'm beggining to think that I need to do a lot more research for starters!

Now that we're into 'big power' territory, it's definitely raised some more issues that I hadn't accounted for (in the financial sense). 'Box cooling being one.

The myriad of G50 types, ratios and LSD's are making my head hurt. I'm off to the factory tomorrow so I'll try and get some advice from Ted & Co.

There was a 993 six speeder up for 1300.

Good luck in your search Stig. Might be worth speaking to Quaife re oil cooler/strengthening/cogs etc. as they have some experience in modding G50s.

Let me know how you get on, as your supercharged route is the one to go for IMHO.

STIG

I use a Porche starter on my engine (the largest one), it turns my engine over perfectly hot or cold, and doesn't chew the ring gear up like other set-ups.

By the way I went for the 4 speed turbo box as is reputed up to 850bhp and gives me 60 in first and 212 in top.

Pain in the ass to get the clutch and gear linkage right though.

There was a four speed turbo box for sale, Stig, FYI. It was 2750, brand new from Porsche, allegedly, and comes with an LSD. Link here:

STIG

Be warned its not a standard fit and takes some fettling to get the clutch working, (it was mega heavy but I have fixed that now).

However I would do it again as the gearing is excellent, you would need to change the diff ratio though to get the same as mine, as I have another 4 speed in the corner of my garage and it is lower geared.

My engine is 526Bhp and can spin the wheels in first and second easily so boging down isn't a problem, maybe you should go and have a go in a few cars before which config you go for, as we will all be biased towards our own.

I would worry less over the gearbox and more about dissipating 600 BHP of heat in the engine bay.
ie Camcoat your exhaust.
I am having to do mine to remove the heat from the exhaust

I ended up putting 3 oil coolers on the engine, and another on the gearbox, and I've just got a namby pamby little Rover engine.

Give me a shout if you want to have a look at how I've arranged my gearbox cooling Stig. It worked a treat on Saturday.
