I have a 54 plate Foesta that is coming up to its MOT. The car itself is probably worth 500, but to be honest its only to get to work and back so no point in replacing it.

However recently there has been a kind of whirring noise coming from the front of the car, it is quieter when I turn to the left than it is when its straight on or to the right, and also on occasion on turning either way there is a clunking noise.

My first instinct was that this was the drive shaft causing this noise and also the rattle, but it still makes the same noise when freewheeling in neutral and I have even tried it with the engine off and the noise is still there. Any suggestions? If the whirring is the drive shaft thaen I can get that dealt with as they aren't that expensive and I can get it fixed by a mate, similar if the clunking i a control arm on the suspension not the drive shaft.

However before I look into this with a mechanic i just wondered if anyone would know what this noise is, as obviously i dont want to spend a huge amount on the car due to its value and it may be better getting another cheap runaround.

If your mate knows enough to replace CV joints then he probably also knows enough to tell you whether the CV joint is causing that noise. He may even be able to advise you on the other knock/rattle you mention. If not, half an hour's labour at your local garage should be enough for them to diagnose these and tell you what they will cost to fix.

The whirring noise sounds like possibly left front wheel bearing, the clunking when turning (as said above) sounds like a CV joint.

A CV could also POSSIBLY be causing the whirring, so you need to get it checked out by someone who knows what they are doing/listening to.

There is also a support bearing on the right hand drive shaft extension that you can easily check to see if it is that that’s worn
