Aluminium corrosion on Defender 90
Discussion
Hi,
I realise this has been covered before on other forums but from my reading of them there doesn't appear to be any consensus on how best to deal with aluminium corrosion. ACF 50 was one product suggested and others (such as De-oxide 200) I couldn't seem to find when searching the intranet, so I was hoping someone on this forum may have restored a Defender or have other suggestions of other/new products.
In brief, my recently acquired '98 Defender 90 300TDi has excellent panels and I bought it from the original purchaser. However, there is oxidisation on both front wings and the rear tub which I would like to have seen to and resprayed. Interestingly the doors are good. The original owner informs me this 'corrosion' began appearing 6 months after purchasing the vehicle new and although he tried to get the dealer to rectify, they suggested it was a LR problem caused during the original painting and to cut a long story short, it was never addressed.
Is there any chemical type treatment that can be applied to the aluminium prior to respraying that will prevent it returning? Or is it just the case that it needs to be sanded back to the bare aluminium and etch primed before applying the finishing paint?
Any suggestions/advice greatly appreciated.
