I'm looking at a 2010 R36 wagon.

One owner, full service history at dealers but pretty high mileage at 140k miles.

Should I go for it? Or plenty of worries down the road with the gearbox and/or timing chain issues..

Your thoughts?

Is it cheap enough that should one of the two issues rear their head then you can spend the money to repair it & it still workout similar money to it's worth. If not then I'd walk away & I like those cars.

You can get the timing chain wear checked if that helps.

I like them as well. Admire your bravery if you go for it.

Thought about a Skoda 3.6? Rare, but worth a look, and cheap for what they are.

As already mentioned I would be certainly checking out the chains and the dsg system as they can both be a costly job if they have issues.

Also even though the engines are strong and mileage is not catastrophic these cars are notioursly difficult to sell on so bare that in mind considering one at this mileage.

It's all relative down to the cost so if it cheap enough id realistically expect it to be sub 9k with no faults then go for it.

I reckon I can get the price of the R36 down to around 5700~5800.
I'd definitely get the timing chain checked out and the dsg too.
Not sure how the mechanic will be able to do a diagnostic on the gearbox.

Any concerns with regards to other stuffs, eg electronics, hub bearing, bushes, engine mounts etc with such a high mileage german car? And is the 3.6 BWS engine bulletproof?
Tbh I've never owned any car above 100k miles, so this is new ground for me..

The engine is pretty strong so I wouldn't worry other than what has already been mentioned.
Other stuff is just standard things to check when buying any old car, i would pay particular attention to rusty wings / tailgates that have often just had a "dealer" blow over cover up on these that will just re-occur once again if not fixed correctly.

At that price is sounds like a good buy. I have not seen it for sale think there is only one on ebay at the minute, if it is far from you then maybe someone on the forum could take a look over it for you? I would do if anywhere in the north west.

I'm actually down under in the land of Oz. (converted the kms to miles and aud to gbp wink)

It's a direct seller car, and reasons i'm considering this r36 is because:
- one owner car
- full service history at VW dealership
- MY10.5 with rns510 and new aircon dash layout (see below)
- Dynaudio sound system

I'll do a pre-purchase inspection at a VW specialist workshop and if the engine and gearbox are good I'll most likely go for it!

One of your fellow Aussies did a thread on running an R36 a while back, maybe it's him selling.
