Do you read investment advice articles from anyone in particular, and act on their recommendations?

I wish I had a taken Tom Winnifrith's advice regarding getting out of Quindell, and I've heard it said that what Simon Thompson at Investor's Chronicle says is virtually a self-fulfilling prophesy.

From your experience, who else really knows their stuff?

For me it has to be Anton Kreil, though he is primarily focused on trading programs.

I follow him on twitter, sometimes he has tips, check out this video shot in April 2018 and how his 'predictions' have fared to date:

https://youtu.be/E16eGgqn-og?t=47 (conference was in april).

Investors Chronicle is on my todo list (subscription).

I've purchased the odd single copy and have enjoyed the content.

There is a page on IC that lists Simon's share picks over the last year. I looked at some older ones and was able to back test them (charts). In most cases had you taken his recommendations you would have done very well. A small few of his picks did not do as well as expected, so while he is very good he isn't mystic meg smile

Your sell example OP, is of course using hindsight.

I have come accept that equity markets and the performance of individual companies, is fairly unpredictable, particularly over the short or medium term. Forecasting is a dubious art. Have you noticed how forecasters 'revise' their forecast, and ignore what they said previously?

At the beginning of every year my (about) 25 holdings start at 0% gain. At the end of each year, it is often surprises me which companies are amongst the top risers, and which are the fallers. Sometimes last years fallers, become stars during the following year. I think it just shows that being invested in the market for the long-term, is usually better than trying to predict when to get in and out.

It all goes to suggest, that accurate forecasting of markets is not possible.
The only time that things becomes more obvious, is when the fundamentals indicate mispricing or a bubble. Even then though, the timing of the unravelling is impossible to forecast.

You could try looking for dividend forecasters. That is much easier, and amongst most of the bigger companies, payments tend to be pleasingly reliable.
