911 as a second "family" car?

How big is the space at the back?
I know, I know: I will try one next week and I know the Panamera but, well, I am bored at the moment.
Assuming you mean a modern 911, the space won't be an issue as long as you do your research on baby seats and buggies. What's more of a problem is the fact that it ceases to become fun to drive with your family in it as you don't really want your young kid's head sloshing around in the back. Ours is 19 months old and we've been out in the 911 twice in that time, always end up taking the family car. How big is the space at the back?

But if you want one for your own fun and need to use the "2+2" argument to convince the wife then yes, it's great for that purpose

I’ve got a 3.5 year old, 2 year old and 2 month old, no probs fitting them all in with a pram + boogie board (babyzen yo-yo+) and baby Bjorne, so no excuse.
Mrs has disco, I have 991.2 GTS perfect second car, I’ve already done the research on the car seats in another thread.....tried loads, cybex Juno fix, fits like a glove. Most room for them and for you

Pointless as a family car, next time you see a 911 with a child seat in the back, wait and see the hassle it all is when they come back to the car.
As the other poster said, might be a good excuse to buy one but you will never take the family out in it.
The s
t people seem to want to take in the modern age with kids is crazy.

What kind of creep waits around by someone's car to see how supposedly difficult it is for the owner to get their kids inAs the other poster said, might be a good excuse to buy one but you will never take the family out in it.

OP, it's the perfect 2nd car for kids. Yes can be a bit of hassle leaning in to get the seatbelts on etc but who really cares when you see the look of pure joy on your son's/daughter's face as they shout "fast daddy" and you give it some beans! Yesterday I had kid & scooter on back seats, wife in front, pram (zapp) in front. what other proper sports car can you do that in. go for it!
Go for it and it doesn’t need to be modern I bought mine when my son was 9 months old, never looked back. That was 13 years ago.
Had some great trips as a family and made some lifelong friends through ownership. One of the best was Le Mans for his 3rd birthday.
We actually ended up with a 944 as our main family car alongside the 911 for a couple of years

Fwiw I used a 996 turbo as my main car (wife had a focus) and for most thing the 911 was fine with a 1 year old and a 4.5 year old on the back. My daughter (the eldest) was finding it a bit of a squeeze, but even as a family of 4 you could take pram and a change bag and it was fine. I'm not going to lie though, space was one of the reasons I got rid, that and at 107,000 miles it was getting a bit high (I took it from mid 60's). When I just had my daughter space was not a problem as she would sit behind my wife who is a bit shorter.
Edit I'm also only 32 so quite agile at getting stuff in the back, also my daughter could quite easily climb in.

You can get good forward facing child seats to fit in a 991. Check previous posts as I have covered this before with photos and models.
I would say that imho it would be wrong to put a 1yr old in a forward facing seat as in the event of an accident their bodies are not strong enough - don’t take my word for it though - there are plenty of highly qualified safety specialists whom have conducted tests on varying child seats.
I got rid of mine this year because my 3 & 5 (now 6) years olds had very little room. We were out one day and saw a really bad accident: my wife and I looked at each other and decided it was time to change the car. What I have been told by 3 OPCs recently is that in the courses they do for fitting child seats they are now being told to try and dissuade customers putting child seats in the back - another OPC said they’d had no such advice given to them. Make your own mind up in that one!

I bought my first 911 this year for the same reasons. Granted my daughter is 7 now, but it's suited the job perfectly. Everyone's busy these days with family and work, going for a drive by myself is harder to fit in. It gets used way more than my previous Cayman. Ok with family in tow I'm not burning the wheels off, but you still have a car with a bit of feel /interaction at sane speeds- to me that's the point of a sports car?
Go for it, as you're kid gets older it'll get easier. Depending on budget, I can't think of a better car than a 911 that covers both bases.

Ignore the trolling about not being able to use the rear seats - my two kids (almost 3, just turned 6) love my 996 and have for the last two years. Oldest is on a cheap Halfords booster, youngest in a BMW OEM seat that fits perfectly. Waited till daughter was one and front-facing before putting her in it as well.
Both on them can climb in the back on their own and the oldest helps the youngest with her belt. On the times I have to reach in, it's zero hassle at all, unless maybe you're 20 stone.
Like others say, you can fit a couple of scooters in the passenger seat as well. Maybe not as easy as an estate, but much more fun for both me and my kids.
It's my daily for dropping the kids off and it's also a great family weekend car for going a run. Have a 320D wagon for when more stuff needs carried about.
Nothing beats getting angry stares at the supermarket when you park at parent and child, only for your kids to come out of the back. Plenty of nice compliments from other dads when they see you packing the kids and the shopping back in and they realise maybe they didn't need a people carrier after all.

We use ours for family trips sometimes and my daughters over 21
my wife's just over 5 feet tall and has rode in the back for more than an hour before with my daughter in the front without complaining (much taller and lack of headroom would probably be an issue)
picked my daughter and her friend up from the centre of London yesterday after they stayed over the weekend and we all managed to fit in fine, including luggage.
I wouldn't want to rely on it but for the occasional journey I don't see an issue.
My kids are 9 and 7 and they love trips in the 911. We do have to pack carefully for a weekend away, but we somehow manage it (even when they insist on taking their scooters with them.) For longer trips away we'll take the the main family car, but I find that I tend to fill whatever boot space is available to me and it's actually surprising what you can fit in the boot of a 911.
like the idea and might be a viable 'reason' to have one - certainly it will fit little one in the back (and adults for a short trip)
but as some other folks have said, the amount of junk parents carry with kids these days is mind boggling.... my friend used to drive around in and MGB, then one kid arrive and now his wife, him, and daughter visit in an estate - filled from front to back (no joke, honest!)
So feasible, but maybe not the wife's idea of a perfect choice
I use my 997 turbo as my daily, doing about 90miles every day. I also use it as the 2nd family car. I have 2 halfords essentials 123 seats in the back, which fit really well and my 2 year old & 4 year old happily sit in them. The 4 year old climbs in himself and the 2 year old I can easily stick in the seat without any issues. The only problem you may have is if you get someone parking close to you, trying to get your car doors open wide enough to get the younger child in the back.
Space wise, the other month I took both kids and all their gear to the inlaws for a sleep over. Suitcases, toys, bedding, etc. So much stuff that the inlaws struggled to get it all in the back of their Ford Fiesta for the return journey.
When the children were smaller, their maxi-cosi pebble babyseat also fitted nicely in the back.
On the 997 if I want, I can have ISO fitted to the passengers front seat and an airbag switch put in, which gives another option should it only be myself & the kids in the car.
The noise of the engine behind the kids does mean that they constantly tell me to "slow down daddy else you will get arrested" when I am only doing 30mph, but this also has the advantage that if they are slightly tired then the noise seems to send them to sleep within minutes of driving.
Overall they find the experience quite exciting and rave about how daddies car is "super fast" as it has a spoiler on the back of it. It also is quite fun seeing peoples reactions when you do the school run in it and all the other parents seem to all have Range Rover sized vehicles.

It is rather cramped in the rear seats of a 991 (but much better than in older 911s). For longer trips (>½ hour), something more spacious is recommended if travelling with more than one passenger (regardless of age). However, a Maxi-Cosi Cabriofix fits well behind the front passenger (not driver), but it is not easy to get the child belted. As previously mentioned, with a family on board you can not fully explore the 911 sports car.

For my children the 997 works well, they are aged 4 and 7. I have a pair of the Halfords car seats in the rear seats (although I have taken out the normal seat backs and bases, so the car seats sit on the carpet).
The girls are perfectly happy on a 3 hour journey down the a303 for example, no complaints. We have an old VW Golf too that my wife commutes in.

How safe in a crash would those child seats be now though? Is it all robust? The girls are perfectly happy on a 3 hour journey down the a303 for example, no complaints. We have an old VW Golf too that my wife commutes in.
