Mrs Scrump has had a 1.6 petrol Nissan note for almost ten years. Put 80k miles on it and it has been amazingly reliable. Apart from the usual brakes, tyres and a battery it has only had a couple of rattle issues from the front suspension and the door lock which were cheaply fixed and I put these down the shared Renault components.
The 1.6 petrol engine is a Nissan unit with a cam chain, I am not sure whether the 1.4 is a Nissan or a Renault engine and whether it is as reliable as the 1.6.

A lad at work has one. It’s a 10-plate and has recently had to go in for gearbox work and a failed starter motor. [Sorry I couldn’t give you more detail].

If reliability is your main “thing” I’d go for a Honda Jazz or a Toyota Yaris. I used to like Nissans before they merged with Renault.

That could be with the 1.5 Diesel engine which is a Renault unit and seems to have a few issues.

A few lads at work have had the newer nissans and they have all been pretty poor. They were diesels but issues were not limited to engine ones. I agree with the other poster, get a Honda or Toyota if you prize reliability extremely highly

I appear to also be married to Mrs Scrump. We've had our 1.6 auto for 6 years, it's now on 95k and all it's needed is brakes, tyres and a battery.

1.6 auto Note here. Second we've had after the first was written off in an accident. No issues from either in 3 years of ownership between the two cars.

The 1.6 petrol which a few of us have been discussing has a traditional torque converter automatic gearbox which is not ideal for best mpg.
Mrs Scrump gets around 35mpg with her short distance town driving.

44mpg when doing 80 on the motorway, 50 if I cruise with the trucks. 36 on her 2 mile commute.

Missus has had her 1.5 Diesel Note for almost 6 years. She has done almost 50k miles. No reliability issues at all. Simply tyres, bulbs, wipers and brakes. Currently showing 63.8mpg on the computer.

I'd pick the 1.6 petrol, mate's missus had one for 9 years with no problems and then I bought it and had another year and 10k miles with no problems at all.

Mine's likes to go through springs, all 4 replaced in last year, common on owners forum, apart from that, consumables only, 1.6 auto, been a great car for me!
