Waiting for MOT, being told to SORN
Discussion
What is the delay on an MOT? Most of my local places can do it same day or next day. Oddly I use Kwikfit (can book online to a timeslot) and they have been excellent (I know this is controversial) with no up-sell or "big problems found". They even saw that a bulb was out and fixed it (£6) before starting the test to avoid a failure.

Ahh... that would do it.There used to be a 2 week grace period but that seems to have been scrapped.

It is automatically cancelled when you retax it.

Don't think there was ever a 2 week grace period. Urban myth?
It's a fair question - I saw it in an old post on another forum. Using the wayback machine...https://web.archive.org/web/20101008194032/http://...
When SORN isn't needed
SORN isn’t needed if:
you no longer have the vehicle and DVLA has been informed
your insurance company has written off the vehicle
you take the vehicle abroad permanently
you apply for a refund of vehicle tax and don’t keep the vehicle
you are keeping the vehicle off the road and untaxed for less than 14 days
your vehicle was last taxed before 31 January 1998
Not clear when they removed it.
The whole tax thing seems designed to create penalties.
I have several cars, so I put the tax on direct debit, auto renew - I'll never forget again, wonderful. Or so I thought. One car has tax and MOT coincident, I knew the MOT had run out so I wasn't driving it. Also need a part (Alfa 155 V6, so pretty old). Next thing I know, I'm being dinged for not taxing it - they cancel the direct debit if it doesn't have an MOT.
Why can't they just take the bloody money? Driving it without tax and without an MOT will get caught in precisely the same way, ANPR, so why create a penalty for no reason? Arrgh.

Of course they do. You've never been able to tax a car that doesn't have an MOT.I have several cars, so I put the tax on direct debit, auto renew - I'll never forget again, wonderful. Remember, "monthly DD" still means "buy a year's tax". It's just that you then pay for it on drip-feed through the year

I know that. I was doing yearly DD - which means "pay for a years tax and then pay for it again next year". Remember, "monthly DD" still means "buy a year's tax". It's just that you then pay for it on drip-feed through the year
In the "old days" the inability to display a valid tax disc was the way you got caught. No tax (easy to see), led to further checks and maybe no MOT. In the days before computers, this was sensible.
In the modern world, if you check a plate you can see the tax and MOT status immediately. You can't do it by looking at the car, there is no tax disc. So there is no reason to link the two. If you drive without tax or MOT, you're breaking the law. It would surely be easier just to take the money that is being offered and let the driver get caught for driving with no MOT (if they do so).

I'm rather surprised that, given you can't use the car in its MOT-less state, the powers that be discourage people from giving them money for nothing.
Exactly my point. I suspect the thinking is actually "we'd rather have the penalty as well".Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
