I was having a lot of trouble with our 2002 E39 530i not starting, for a long time it occasionally just wouldn’t crank over at all, the keys kept going out of sync with the EWS it gave lots of error messages about the “toleration of changing code increased with key” on the C110 code scanner then the number of key was given.

That problem was steadily getting worse & the only cure was to leave the battery disconnected for over half an hour.

I tried a new ring antenna, but that made no difference, so then got a new EWS from BMW.

They come programmed with all the correct codes for your keys. But just putting it in means the car will crank over fine but won’t start.

The new EWS has to be synced to the DME, I used INPA to sync it & that worked fine it started no problem & was fine for a week or so, but then it started loosing sync.

Now it’s loosing sync a lot of the time. The error message in INPA is “209 EWS - code error”, the C110 code scanner reads the same message as something like “EWS anti tamper”

Keeping the laptop with INPA on it in the car means I can resync quite quickly but I need a permanent solution - anyone got any suggestions?

Other posts people say about battery’s but it often happens after a good hours drive having only stopping for a very short time. The battery voltage is always very healthy.

The only other posts I have found have no resolution.

I have a solution, not quite fixing the problem but bypassing it.

You could have the ews removed from the engine ecu. Bwchiptune and End Tuning are two companies I know can do it.

Thanks, I had seen the EWS emulators, I think they are meant to do the same thing, but people who have them fitted to race cars say they have caused then no end of problems.

If those companies actually have a way of modding the the DME so its not looking for the EWS it may be better.

I really wanted to keep the security so got the new EWS.

The companies mentioned remove it via software rather than an emulator I think.
