Fishy 2nd Hand Car
Discussion
My mother recently (yesterday) bought a car privately and the seller said we can register the car online or he could do it, my mother said we would when she got back home... long story short, it won't let us register or tax the vehicle as the DVLA website is saying the "Vehicle Details Could Not Be Found" and that the logbook ref # "is either incorrect or does not come with the latest V5C issued for this vehicle"
the person that sold us it, registered keeper (according to the photocopied logbook page) and the customer that put the car in for MOT before sale each have different names (3 different names total)
she was given the new keeper slip and a photocopy of the main logbook page and we can't proceed any further because the ref numbers aren't adding up on website - now the guy won't return our attempts to cantact him.
should I jump down to the post office and see what they say? or go to the police station to keep ourselves right? so confused right now please help.

Police station is probably a bit drastic, ring DVLA first and ask them to check if the serial number of the V5 you have matches their records.
There are a few possible reasons for the V5 not bringing up the car details, most of them innocent.
The most likely outcome is having to apply for a new V5 at £25.

yeah think I'm starting to panic - especially when we tried to ring the seller and got an Indian guy on the line. There are a few possible reasons for the V5 not bringing up the car details, most of them innocent.

will get on the bell to dvla and do my best innocent voice lol.
thanks.

It is a little too late now - but why, oh why did you not carry out an HPI check on the vehicle before you left home?. Very easy and cheap and could have saved you all this grief.
...Because I don't know what an HPI check is...? the only thing I could find on DVLA was an mot and tax checker :/

My brain did not read the bit about the V5 being photocopied, this is a bit more concerning.
Do the reference numbers on the copy and the green slip match?
yes, both identical. Do the reference numbers on the copy and the green slip match?

I've never even heard of "hpi" until now, maybe something that should be a bit more publicly available when googling "car history check", don't you think? - which, fyi, is what I do before buying ANY car... STILL never seen/heard of an HPI check.
Out of interest, I just googled "car history check"....and it came up with a load of HPI check links
Hope you get it sorted soon - as someone else has suggested, I'd check the VIN on the car (look in the owner's handbook for location) against the VIN on the photocopy V5, double check you've entered the V5 reference number correctly, and then phone DVLA.
Worth getting someone that knows at least the vaguest of basics to help you when next buying a car though.

ahh that'll be all the ads at the top - yeah I can't stand ads and usually skip past them down to the gov.uk links... still never knew of "HPI"
