Electric (push!) Bikes days numbered??
Discussion
Notwithstanding the recent hit and run in London a few days ago, they are just getting too fast.
One like this (below) went past me on the towpath in Ham the other day doing over 40mph. I was doing a paltry 15mph (100%) human powered and he whooshed past me all but silently. The Stealth brand can all do 60kph - 80kph.

No licence needed. No helmet needed. No insurance needed. No training needed. In this day and age, its staggering but will the H&S bods interject soon????
ETA...we hired similar bikes in SA and they will effortlessly, easily do 40mph.

I don't think those are road legal here, I think they are limited to 20 mph or something.
edit: 15.5mph

Its electric motor:
must have a maximum power output of 250 watts
should not be able to propel the bike when it’s travelling more than 15.5mph

If this looked more like a conventional bicycle I would definitely buy one. Would seriously consider this instead of my motorbike if I could take it down the canal and bike paths as it would be just as fast without the need to pay road tax, insurance etc etc. That being said I'm well aware these aren't actually allowed in the UK. But still...

That's the same proportion over the legal power cap as somebody with an A1 125cc/11kW(15bhp) bike licence riding a 380bhp bike...

Not needed in the same way that the nomadic irish lad riding his dirt bike down the pavement outside my house the other day didn't need them...One like this (below) went past me on the towpath in Ham the other day doing over 40mph. So for electric motorbikes (ie not EAPCs), how are they rated in contrast to CCs? Ie what could I ride on my old person's standard car licence? Either at the 50cc level without L plates or at the 125cc level with L-plates?
Based on power output.AM - 4kW, A1 - 11kW, A2 - 20-35kW.

Classic bit of exaggeration. You should write for the Daily Mail. There's a UK dealer - http://stealthbikeuk.co.uk/
If somebody is going to be riding an illegal US$11k electric bike like a complete bell end anywhere, it's going to be SW London...
Plus to qualify an electric bike needs to have peddles and they have to be the primary (in theory) method of power , in reality you can stick the assist up and choose a low gear and peddle gently but you still have to peddle , you stop the motor stops, mine also stops any assist at 15mph , it’s like hitting a brick wall ,

Does your bike have a mid-drive motor? Mine is in the rear wheel so anything above 15.5 MPH is fairly easy as there is no drag through the gearing as there is with mid-drive motors.BertBert said:
Are there any electric (motor) bikes approved for use in the UK? The non pedal variety.
Bert
Bultaco do a road legal and off road big ebike. Obviously the on road one requires number plate and insurance. "Proper" electric motorbikes, Zero is the first one to spring to mind but there are a few othersBert
