I’m getting out of a bad deal on a Leon FR184 shortly, and I need to find an all-rounder - just not sure which route to take.

The Leon has been just great, nippy, enough toys, features and spec. Experience has been marred somewhat by naively jumping into an expensive RRP PCP!

I want something a bit premium, enough kit to make the motorway commute enjoyable, enough poke and dynamic to make the weekend excursions satisfying.

Shortlist has been things like; 330d M Sport Touring, Golf R estate, M140i... I’ve historically been old-school RWD/AWD but had to get sensible when I got kids and a commute, hence being in a shiny Seat.

There’s a couple of half decent PCP deals from BMW at the minute... There’s also a few 2nd hand options coming through around the £20k mark. I think at 20k miles a year diesel is probably still going to make sense, but if it’s not a massive delta I’d happily get into something that delivers power above 4K RPM.

There’s rumblings of decent leases come September, and of course I’ll see sense if there’s another FWD hatch for £200/month.

I could also just drop a couple of grand on a snotter and just run it into the ground, but I’d rather be in something I actually want to be driving.

What’s the hive-mind consensus? I’ll essentially be handing this back, paying off the excess miles and walking away to start from scratch.

PCP, lease, personal loan for a 2/3yr old motor, loose change for a banger, or some option I’ve not considered?

20k miles a year... Soft limit of £350/month... Motorway commute, A-road hoot... Bluetooth, nav, air-con, acceptable audio... Manual/DSG has been fine, I’d go auto if it’s not an 80s slushmatic... (EDIT: 3yr old and a new arrival in Nov, so 5 doors - I just love a quick estate though!)

Hit me. smile

Question - how can a brand new Seat be more shiny than a 2006 MB S Class for 8K?

Very generous, I’ll accept. smile

I know there’s plenty of suitable cars and I’m open to ideas, but mostly it’s the initial decision on the route I go, new/near new/well used.

At that mileage I’d be going for something older, there’s no cheap way of doing that number of miles (have done similar most of my life and tried every conceivable option), but depreciation is a bh on newer stuff with higher miles.

TBH you will find whatever you have boring fairly soon after spending hours schlepping up and down motorways etc.

530d or the equivalent E-class would be a good shout. Don’t overlook the humble Mondeo, they’re good to drive, insanely practical, and with the money you’ll save off the purchase price you can afford to fuel the 2.5 petrol turbo 5 pot.

I would never have guessed £8k for that.

Has the price just jumped £500? I thought I seen £8000 and now it is £8500?

Reacting to hits from here?

Volvo D5 of some description.

Plenty of toys, comfy, soaks up miles effortlessly, reasonable mpg, last ones had 215bhp and a polestar remap gets the most out of it.

I knew it had jumped.

Still looks a lot of car for £9000, but we all now know he's got a bit to play with and what he is willing to accept.
