Hello All

My wife and I both regularly tow big heavy trailers and we need 4x4. Our tow vehicles work hard, towing about 12,000 miles per year. They get gently battered, will always stink of horse, so I don't spend big money on them - but they have to be dependable and safe, so I maintain them carefully.

We've had a both V8 and diesel Range Rover classics, but I got utterly fed up with fixing them, so switched to Japanese vehicles. Over the last 12 years, we've had two Toyota 4Runners and two 3.2 Shoguns. Currently, I have a decent 4Runner and a reasonable Shogun. I like the Toyota's simplicity and amazing reliability, but it's tow capacity is a tad low for my wife's huge horse trailer when loaded, hence my recent acquisition of the 2nd old Shogun. Shoguns are fine, but not as tough as the 4Runners and I have not bonded with the latest one.

I've just been offered a seemingly very nice 4.2td, automatic, UK spec, 100 series Landcruiser...and I'm tempted...it's cheaper than any other I've seen advertised. I like the idea of a higher tow capacity Toyota and would then flog both of my other tow vehicles in favour of one good one. Landcruisers are expensive in comparison to most other big old 4x4s, but this one has under 100,000 miles on the clock and seems pretty rust-free.

I don't know anything about Landcruisers and I can't find much unbiased opinion on the internet, except that many owners/enthusiats seem to prefer the 80 series. I propose to look at this car tomorrow afternoon. Can anyone give me any pointers for what to look for? Are there any common fail points? Do they rust badly, if so where?

Any advice gratefully received.
