I've been interested in cars for years and living in Essex, you tend to see the max power crowd out a fair bit. Not my cup of tea... but whatever floats your boat.

Anyway, I've noticed recently that cars are coming direct from the facotry in Max Power type bits on.

Clear or smoked indicators are making their way to various hatches... witness the Focus ST170 - clear side repeaters...

The use of mesh in grills... the use of alcantara in colours to match the body (Racing Puma / Astra 888) - even VW seem to be at it with the R32.

Then there are the bigger wheels... lowered suspension... even tinting being offered on some cars from the factory! Vauxhaul has jumped on the bandwagon too - offering bodykits and the like from the factory / dealer...

Even owners of sportscars are not exempt from this.. people going out to get clear indicators... spotted the neighbour painting the callipers on his Porsche the other day!

So are we all becoming a little bit Max Power-ish? Can't accept this personalisation rubbish, as that's what the Max Power lot do... "mod" the car so it's unique to them - only difference I can see is to do with the cost of the car and the parts...

Thoughts?

They're called foglights... and they are turned on by the "Essex boy button" on the dash...

maybe I'm just traditional (or jealous.....nah) but I think a lot of the 'clever' light clusters and all just looks like cheap tack, even on an expensive car.

the only reason I can see for adding or changing something on a car would be if it offers an improvement (performance, durability, etc) over the original item.

I suppose an exception to this statement is the interior, as most other road users' eyes are not abused by it!

(had to say that as I put some aluminium in my interior rather than the flimsy plastic!)

Ever driven a Noble M12? Wastegate noises are awesome.
But then so is the whole car...

A dump valve? on a N/A car?

Yep - agree if you've fitted one you're a complete spanner.. in fact no, you're a bit broken off a spanner.

I used dump valve in quotation marks, because I'm not sure that is their true name.

I have heard so many Max'd up 'cars', mainly Novas and XR3i's eith these wwwwwhhhoooooosshhh things on recently. I keep worrying someone might think it's coming from the Tiv.

If I get hold of one of the drivers I'll make him go ing wwwwhhhhooooossshhhh.

Is it true that electric ones are available to replicate the sound on a non-turbo car? I read it somewhere but not sure.

My mate does an ace impression of a dump valve, very realistic as he bombs off in his rover 420. You need to have the windows down of course for the full effect.

They put dump valves in some Esprits as standard as well. They do have a purpose, but manufacturers can choose to recirculate the dumped air rather than dumping it 'to atmosphere' (the whooooosh noise).

I don't mind them in sports cars, but think they are slightly sad in turbo hatchery.

So my Tamora's got 18" rims, body coloured lamonta interior trim and clear indicator glass.
So it seems TVR are on the bandwagon as well!
Where can I get one of those reverse rounders hats?
Cheers.... Andrew

I cant understand why someone wants to make their car sound like a lorry applying their air brakes. Does it give you more power, sound twatish to me.

re DV's
some people like (and even love!?) that bus sound. I hate it but apparently if you want to tune up a turbo car theyre quite a necessity to protect the turbo, especially if you increase the boost. recirc ones are a lot quieter but the ecu has to be set up to accept the increased air being dumped into the system, apparently, hence the atmospheric DVs.

(i have heard a dv that is less of a bus-like pshhhh and more of a high pitched whistle and together with the wastegate chatter sounds like a wrc rally car )
