Having just house moved yesterday as ever there's a plethora of things to change.

I did the licence on the DVLA website, and they said they would send a new one, but I must return the old one to them cut in half.

My question is, do I wait until I receive the new licence before cutting my existing card. If I did it now, I would be without a licence...in-case I needed to provide it? It wasn't that clear to be honest.. that and I was tired due to moving home yesterday, and all that stress it brings.

Thank you in advance

This is website I used

Nothing personal op, but good grief & WTF. I've just come from another thread where a fella is panicking about whether he might get a ticket from a red light camera when he wasn't even moving for goodness sake. I just don't understand when people started becoming so neurotic and worried about every minor thing all the time.

As for your licence it really doesn't matter what you do with it, no one including the DVLA care when or if you cut it up. I've never cut one up or sent one back but rather just keep them, no one cares.

I've still got my photo license with old and current addresses, I moved 8 years ago and not heard a thing since not sending it back. I am sure they only want it so they know it's not in circulation, and they may not even check it when it is returned and simply destroy the remains.

Keep hold of it until you can check the replacement is correct. My wife's change of address also had some mysterious changes to her motorbike entitlement, the only evidence of the mistake was her old licence.

I’ve moved in the last few weeks and whilst it said on the site you need to return the old licence, nothing on the paperwork that came with it makes any mention of needing to return anything. I seem to remember the same when I moved 3 years ago and I’ve still got the old licence from then too.

I simply phoned them up and said, I needed to keep the old one until I got the new one, because I needed it for ID for probate. DVLA were fine. When I got the new one, I cut the old one up and sent it to DVLA.

My old one remained in my wallet for about six months when I moved house, until I was finally motivated to get rid of it when I had to pick up a parcel and handed the wrong licence to the guy at the Post Office. I chopped it up and threw the pieces in the bin rather than sending them to the dvla, but then I do like to live life on the edge. Nobody came to drag me off to prison.

tl;dr : Do whatever you like with the old one. Nobody cares.

Probably when the government started aggressively issuing 'penalties' for the most minor of mistakes and transgressions, with absolutely no leeway given.

I found the one I should have sent back a couple of months ago yesterday, on my desk. No follow up message, no fine, nothing at all from the DVLA so, it seems, no need to do anything with it.

Yeah don’t sweat it OP, I keep my old ones, come in handy when stopped abroad, means I’m less worried about the admin burden when I get home if they keep it.
