Hi chaps

So our Evoque is going back in the next couple of months and on the search for a bigger, replacement car, mainly to be driven by Mrs Anatonic

We’ve a great local Landy specialist (MID Engineering) about 5 minutes away from our front door who have looked after our Evoque and it’s been reasonably trouble free, or reasonable price to get issues fixed (mainly a split boost hose and some suspension knocks). Space wise though it’s just too small in the boot. As such we’ve been eyeing up a couple of Disco 4s (all FL modes with 8spd) that have also been looked after by MID and have a transparent service history.

However, with a max £20k budget what else should we consider? I’m certain there are better left field choices out there - Geand Cherokee? Land Cruiser?. We’ve two kids (3 and 1) with another on the way in Feb. Also run a sheddy Passat estate due my requirements for cheap and cheerful load lugging (I play in a band / drum kit etc). Ideally need something with reasonable capacity to take 3 kids in car seats, plus luggage - we do a lot of UK/Euro trips camping and the Evoque has had to sit at home on many occasions due to no space.

Thoughts welcome!

I would imagine something like a 5 series estate would be your best bet

I really like the Merc GL. Yes it's absolutely huge but they have great reviews and you should get a decent one around 20k. Little bit dated on the inside at this price tho as the facelift ones are starting about 25k. I quite fancy one having 3 kids.

Much as it pains me to utter these words, you could probably get a Jeep GC that is younger, equal or better spec and lower mileage than the 20k Disco equivalent. Decent diesel engines on a par with the JLR units and similar credentials offroad.

I'd still plump for the Landy any day of the week - but as ZXR above correctly states - there are other avenues that give you more metal for your money if you aren't overly bothered about the badge on the bonnet.

The D4 was in many ways an evolution of the D3 rather than a brand new model - so JLR had plenty of time to iron out the bugs and hiccups that usually occur with any new design. A later D4 is a reasonably safe bet as far as modern second hand Landies are concerned - especially if you have access to a good Indy place familiar with the tech.

Thanks chaps - definitely some food for thought - thanks ZX10R for the links too!

Not too fussed over badge, so it's more about something we can keep for at least 5 or so years with reasonable running costs and with expected maintenance. Love the idea of the R50, but suspect might be a tad ruinous on fuel!

I'm swaying towards the Jeep GC somewhat but the Kia has really caught my attention as well, not something I'd previously considered.

I do love the D4 for the sheer amount of space you get and I can see this being a bonus when our family expands in Feb, but as you state, at £20k I'm looking at either high mile HSE spec, or lower specs for a FL 8-spd model. I've always been really happy with our LR indy and they've given me some helpful advice whilst also connecting me with their customers looking to change their D4s... so I'll see what happens after I've viewed a couple.

Heading out to poke around a Jeep GC this morning and also a Q7 so I've something to go against and compare with.

Nissan X Trail is a good budget option, but if you can squeeze to a Skoda Kodiaq then that would be my pick.

Picked up a '16 plate GC as the family car four weeks ago. Did a 200 miles round trip to Southampton in it over the weekend - such an easy car to drive, especially considering its size. Love it!

What ever car you choose I'd say get a six cylinder version. The difference is night and day in the quality of driving, noise etc.

Also I'd have a look at the X3, for your budget you're get a decent spec 30d and the 35d is quite quick, also they're much lighter than the X5.
