2006 VW R32 - a not so little project car!

So after much fannying about, 2 years after my infamous “Will an R32 achieve 40mpg?” I can now proudly state the answer is a big fat no.

I set out to buy a low mileage £20,000 Golf R or a C63, and ended up with a slightly chavved up £7700 Golf R32 with 96,000 miles.

Once I’d decided on a R32 I set out for one with Zolders. This one was caked in dust from sitting in a lock up for so long, part of a small collection of vehicles. It wouldn’t start. Great! I found it completely by accident at my local used car lot. I couldn’t believe my luck!

Spec (quite odd)

Cloth seats (quite rare)
No rear wiper (stupid)
Diamond Black pearl
3 door, DSG
18” gunmetal “Zolder” wheels
Heated and electrically folding mirrors
Heated seats

Sports kit
Privacy glass
Active steering
Multifunction heated leather steering wheel

Mods:

Full Forge Motorsport induction system
Stainless steel non resonated exhaust (I think Milltek?)
Splitter (Edit: Cuprabob has identified this as a Leon Cupra R splitter )
Upgraded suspension (don’t have a clue apart from the fact that it’s as hard as nails. If anybody knows about the car please let me know)
Dubious looking R32 badges everywhere on the engine bay
Cheapo Chinese knock off taillights (to be swiftly replaced)

On the initial test drive the car tried to kill me with the combination of uneven ditchfinders and a lot of torque. And so a bond was made.

A reasonable deal was struck and a deposit placed.

The paint in the advert looks shoddy but in real life the car has been detailed and it looks good.

To do:

Remove the badges on the engine bay
Replace oil cap
Detail
Full service
New battery
New tyres
Lights (I don’t know, they look acceptable in person but shadowline will offset the look)

Maybe:

Replace the Recaros for leather seats
Sat nav from a MK7 (seems to be a straight swap)
Upgrade to a wikkid sik stereo system bruv



This was owned by an R32OC member at one point. Was supposed to be a part ex jobby for my Audi but it was too hardcore to drive daily for 20,000 miles (it seems to be pretty modded as my ears are constantly bleeding). For this reason this car is simply a bit pointless but who cares?

Not aware of any MK5 R32s with a heated front screen, High Beam Assist, Heated Steering Wheel or Active Cruise Control (ACC). Were they retrofitted by a previous owner?

I think so. The car appears to have MK6 seats judging by the newer R logo on them. I did see the heated screen button IIRC but I am reading the spec off the listing so forgive me if I’m incorrect. The car is at the main stealer having the new battery I bought and some other bits fitted and full service.

I think so. I did see the heated screen button but I am reading the spec off the listing so forgive me if I’m incorrect. The car is at the main stealer having the new battery I bought and some other bits fitted and full service.

If you are talking about the button on the top left of the climate control, then it's just a screen demist button. I doubt very much the screen is heated and it sounds as if the listing is a bit dubious. Sounds as if it's been cut and pasted off a listing of a later Golf.

From the picture, it looks as though someone has fitted a MK1 LCR splitter on the front. Popular with MK4 R32 owners but less so with MK5 R32 owners.

Just had a look at the advert for the car on Autotrader. The seats are the standard R32 sport cloth seats. The new style "R" logo is just stick on plate on the height adjust lever.

As most people specced the optional leather, cloth seats are relatively rare however the real rare ones are cloth Recaros (Wingback) as a gain most people specced leather Recaros.

I've also read the listing and there are definitely has some errors., so I doubt very much it has those things I've highlighted. They use the old terminology for ACC (Active Chassis Control). MK5 R32 never had it and no owner would retrofit it as it's a major undertaking.

it is certainly extremely boomy with a consistent “mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm” drone from the exhaust! Also found it funny to piss people off by revving it at traffic lights! Sorry, I’m a chav at heart

The £16000 R32 was vastly overpriced and had a distinctive tappet while this one runs smooth as a nut.

Great sound my gran had one up until last year with a Milltek & a set of BBS's she had it 7 years & it never missed a beat but she did have to have the chain & tensioners done as a precaution.

Does anyone know how to decode a VW VIN for real spec list? Since the car is at the mean stealers thru the sales people, I contacted Barretts VW in Dundee but haven’t received a repsonse yet.
