E Class estate rear leg room compromise?
Discussion
We're looking for a big estate that will take two dogs, two large teenagers and not baulk at 35k miles per year on European motorways. The top of the list is the E class because of the boot space, but the kids have complained that there is nowhere to put their feet - the electrics for the front seats sit so low under the seats that the rear leg room is really compromised. Is there anything I should know about speccing an E Class to avoid this?
We live in central Europe and find ourselves doing loads of motorway miles so we need something comfortable at speed that doesn't compromise rear leg room. We did 800 miles this weekend; early start, 400 miles, lunch with family, dinner and breakfast with friends and then home. Same for August BH but in a different direction. I really like the 5 Series and E class but in both cases the RWD gives a big transmission tunnel. We don't really want to go SUV as you have to go really big to get a comparable boot, and are considering a Superb or A6 - is there anything else we have missed?

When I looked at E class estates last year I found the same regarding rear seat foot space.
The latest 213 models seemed to be very compromised (but I did not manage to try a wide range of front seats).
The earlier 212 models seemed to vary depending on which front seats were fitted.
I bought a late 212 estate with the mutli contour dynamic seats (which have a massage function but no electric fore/aft function) and even though I have them adjusted very low there is plenty of rear foot space.
Edit to add: the Superb has better rear foot space than the E class if that is your main criteria!

Superb is by far the biggest rear leg room I've ever experienced. Until you've actually been in one it is hard to believe!
I know, and that's what we have at the moment. Apart from two solenoids and one fuse it's been faultless over 160k and 5 years. Same as every time though, we are looking at everything out there.Gassing Station | Car Buying | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
