Filming car journey.

Last night I went for a drive in the Griff and thought I would film it, with the new suction gizmo I've got to fix the camcorder to the windscreen. It was about 7:30 in the evening so light was getting dimmer, but still farily light. When I viewed the film it was very dark. I had the camcorder set on automatic. What is the best setting to have the camera on for these conditions? I know you won't know exactly because all camera settings are different, but what kind of setting generally am I looking for?

I've done a lot of filming from cars and my best tip is to make sure that there isn't too much sky in the shot - this will have the effect of making the land seem very dark. Also, (obviously) for the same reason, try and head away from the sun.

You can get filters for dv cams as well. Also, you may want to see if your cam has any environment presets and use one for dusk, etc.

...you can always use "night vision" if it's a Sony and then clean it up post production. People tend to end up looking like extras from Night of the Living Dead, though...

Yep, it's got a twilight setting but the explanation as to what it is in the manual is a bit baffling.

Manual said:

TWILIGHT: Makes evening scenes look more natural. White Balance is automatically set to (image of sun), but can be changed to your desired setting. When Twilight is chosen, the camcorder automatically adjusts the focus from approx. 10m to infinity. From less than 10m, adjust the focus.

It also has a night scope feature as well, but mentions something about strobing.
